Police have made an arrest after a 72-year-old woman was hit by a car and killed last night.

Emergency services were called to a scene in Bootle, Liverpool, at around 7.45pm yesterday to reports of a woman who had been hit by a Ford Focus.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital, where she unfortunately died a short time later.

Now, police have arrested a 46-year-old unnamed man on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.

The suspect remains in police custody pending an interview.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy of Merseyside Police said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the lady’s family at this tragic time and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

‘Although we have made an arrest, the investigation into this incident is ongoing and in its early stages. I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

‘I would like to specifically appeal to the drivers of a silver-coloured BMW 1 Series and a small black vehicle, possible a Fiat 500, that were travelling along Brewster Street towards the city centre shortly before 7.45pm.  I believe that the occupants of these vehicles may be able to provide vital information.’

Police though, did confirm that the driver of the Ford Focus remained at the scene after colliding with the woman.

A couple who witnessed the tragic incident which occurred on Brewster Street, said they saw ‘bags and Christmas presents strewn across the road.’

They told the Liverpool Echo: ‘The girl was on the floor and we pulled over to help her.’

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or may have any further information to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy added: ‘I would urge others in the area at the time, please check your dashcam footage, including those who drove through the area, in the minutes following the collision.
