West Midlands Ambulance Services rushed to the scene at the River Arrow in Alcester, Warwickshire, on Monday evening with the boy later taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital

A child is fighting for his life after a horrifying river rescue in a quiet market town.

The boy was rescued by emergency services in the dramatic incident in Alcester, Warwickshire, on Monday evening. Residents heard blazing sirens in the evening as ambulance workers raced to the scene by the River Arrow.

The nine-year-old was rescued after getting into trouble in the river, CoventryLive reports. West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) confirmed that the boy was out of the water when they arrived but was now in a "serious condition".

He had to be given trauma care at the scene and was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital on Tuesday morning. A girl who was also at the scene was assessed but did not need medical treatment.

"We were called to reports of patients in the water near Kingfisher Way at 9.32pm, three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a Hazardous Area Response Team paramedic, a community first responder and the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene," a WMAS spokesperson said.

"On arrival, we found two patients who were already out of the water and needed medical treatment. A boy was in a serious condition and received specialist trauma care at the scene before being taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The second patient, a girl, was assessed and discharged at the scene.

Alcester Police last night posted: "Our officers are currently handling an incident taking place in the river near the back of Kingfisher Way in Alcester. They will be in the area for the next few hours at least. There is no threat to the wider public.

"We will share more information when we are able to. Thank you for your understanding." Warwickshire Police were also contacted for comment.
