The Prince and Princess of Wales shared an emotional message on social media following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final as well as a sweet picture of their youngest children Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis

The Prince and Princess of Wales have shared an emotional personal message following England’s Euro final defeat to Spain - and a picture of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis watching the match at home.

Taking to their social media, both William and Kate praised Gareth Southgate’s men who lost 2-1, saying: "England, your teamwork, grit and determination were an inspiration to all of us, young and old. Congratulations to Spain. W & C." The message was accompanied by the snap taken by Kate of Charlotte and Louis in their England shirts bearing their names and ages watching last night’s game.

It comes after Kate, Charlotte and Louis watched England’s heartbreaking defeat at home while Prince William, who is president of the Football Association, and Prince George, 10, travelled to Berlin for the final. Father and son were seen on an emotional roller coaster as they sat along King Felipe of Spain and his younger daughter Sofia for the match. The pair could be seen looking in despair as Spain opened the scoring before punching the air with delight as Cole Palmer equalised.

However, as Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winning goal, but William and George looked dejected as the England team missed out on Euro glory in the final for the second time running. Seconds after the final whistle, William, who is president of theFootballAssociation, posted on social media: "This time it just wasn’t meant to be. We’re all still so proud of you. Onwards. W."

Meanwhile, minutes later, King Charles urged the England team to "hold your heads high" as the years of hurt go on for England, with the World Cup win in 1966 their last and only major silverware. In a message to manager Gareth Southgate and the team, the King said: "Although victory may have eluded you this evening, nevertheless my wife and I join all my family in urging you and your support team to hold your heads high.

"All those who have participated in sporting activities at any level will know how utterly despairing such a result can feel when the prize was so near – and will join me in sending heartfelt sympathy, even as we congratulate Spain. But please know that your success in reaching the European Championship final is a really great achievement in itself, and one that brings with it the pride of a nation which will continue to roar for the Three Lions today – and in the many triumphs which I have no doubt lie ahead. Charles R."

It had been a busy day for the Wales family yesterday as earlier in the day, Kate and Charlotte went to Wimbledon for the men’s final where they say Carlos Alcaraz crowned champion for a second year in a row. Kate has been undergoing chemotherapy and made her first public appearance since announcing her cancer diagnosis in March at the Trooping the Colour ceremony in London last month.

She did not attend the women’s singles final on Saturday, and Wimbledon chairwoman Debbie Jevans presented the trophy to Barbora Krejcikova on her behalf.
