A barrage of missiles hit Israel on Friday evening as one commentator chillingly warned that the attack may be an attempt to deplete the country’s ’Iron Dome’ defense system as Iran prepares for a retaliatory attack

A missile onslaught aimed at Israel on Friday evening has sparked fears that the country’s Iron Dome defence system could be overwhelmed, as a pundit ominously suggested the attack near the Galilee Panhandle, close to Lebanon’s border, might be a ploy to exhaust Israel’s defences ahead of an impending Iranian counterstrike.

Terrifying footage circulating on social media captured the moment Israel’s Iron Dome valiantly intercepted incoming missiles, detonating them in the sky above towns on the border. The clips depict a volley of rockets being launched over the frontier, which are then met by a flurry of Israeli counter-rockets.

The Times of Israel reported no immediate damage or injuries from the incident. It is suspected that the projectiles were fired by Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant faction that has become an ally of Iran. Since entering the conflict in Gaza, Hezbollah has been sending rockets, missiles, and drones into Israel on an almost daily basis.

An American user on X, previously known as Twitter, alarmingly declared: "The ISRAELI IRON DOME is being OVERWHELMED by a SECOND HEZBOLLAH MISSILE ATTACK," while sharing a video originally posted by a journalist and activist known as Syrian Girl. She ominously noted: "Just as I predicted hours ago, the Iron Dome is being overwhelmed in preparation for Iran’s retaliation."

The original post by the user reads: "Prediction, while Iran retaliates against Israel, a missile salvo from all sides of the axis of resistance will drown the iron dome. But the iron dome won’t matter anyway, if Iran litterally goes Ballistic."

Another account, known as OSINTdefender, which presents itself as an "Open Source Intelligence Monitor focused on Europe and Conflicts across the World", published another series of videos showcasing the attack. The post stated: "Footage showing dozens of interceptions by the Israeli Iron Dome and MIM-104 ’Patriot’ Air Defense Batteries over Northern Israel within the last few minutes following a large barrage of rockets and drones launched by Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon; in my opinion this could be an attempt to exhaust the stocks of Israeli surface-to-air missile batteries in the north of the country, before a larger attack using land-attack cruise and other more advanced missiles."

This comes in the wake of the mounting threat of a counterattack from Iran who pledged to exact revenge on Israel and the US after the former bombed a consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1, resulting in the death of seven of Iran’s top officials, including General Mohammad Reza Zahedi.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden hinted at a likely assault from Iran on Israel "sooner than later" further adding that he doesn’t wish to delve into secure, classified information. However, he did mention that his "expectation is sooner than later."

"We are devoted to the defence of Israel. We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel, and Iran will not succeed," Biden stated to reporters in a dramatic end to his press briefing. His government has already flagged concerns about a "significant attack" in the region from Iran in revenge for an embassy raid, noting that neither Israeli nor American forces in the area are immune.

John Kirby, the spokesman for the National Security Council, revealed that the council is "watching this very, very closely". The entire Department of Defense acknowledged that more resources would be dispatched to the Middle East as the US aims "to bolster regional deterrence efforts and increase force protection for US forces," according to a DOD official in conversation with CNN.

Israel, America and their allies are all fearing an assault in the area from Iran, but it’s nothing new - Iran-supported groups have previously attacked US soldiers in neighbouring Iraq and Syria, with one assault in Jordan resulting in the death of three US servicepeople, according to CNN.

Previous fears were that Iran might attack within a week following the onslaught on their consulate in Syria, but almost two weeks after the bombing, no such raids have taken place.

Analysts suggest that a wary Iran may use proxies like Hezbollah to carry out an attack, rather than instigating the conflict in the region directly, as this could provoke retaliatory strikes from the US and its allies which is something Iran would rather avoid.

After the attack, a conversation was held between Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister. In it, Biden alerted Netanyahu to the prospect of backlash for continuing to disregard civilian lives, as they discussed the upcoming "inevitable" retaliation from Iran.

Since Hamas militants backed by Iran invaded Israel on October 7, 2023, over 33,000 Palestinians have lost their lives. Approximately 1,200 individuals who sought refuge in their homes or were attending a nearby music festival were tragically massacred during the initial onslaught.

But the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have launched relentless counterattacks, targeting hospitals, refugee camps and other safety-designated locations. This has tragically left millions of citizens homeless and desperate for food and water.

Tensions have developed between Israeli and US officials, due to a perceived lack of shared information prior to the attack on Damascus. The consequence of this communication breakdown could potentially be detrimental to the US.
