Israel's prime minister was rushed to hospital after complaining of feeling unwell, as the nation bakes amid a 30C heatwave.

Benjamin Netanyahu, 73, was treated at Israel's Sheba Hospital, near the coastal city of Tel Aviv. Israeli news site Walla said an unnamed official close to Netanyahu said the world leader had fainted at home but was fully conscious at the hospital.

Hospital officials also said Netanyahu was conscious and walking on his own.

A spokesman for his office said he had spent Friday enjoying Israel's Sea of Galilee at a time of high summer temperatures which have reached 30C.

It said he felt dizzy and his doctor instructed him to go to Sheba Hospital.

The statement added: "Prime Minister Netanyahu arrived a short while ago to the Sheba Medical Center.

"He is well and is undergoing a medical evaluation."

It added initial tests by doctors found no problems and it appeared Netanyahu was suffering from dehydration. Doctors have ordered further tests.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid issued a statement wishing Netanyahu a "full recovery and good health."

The message posted on Twitter read: "I wish Prime Minister Netanyahu a complete recovery and good health.

"Feel better."

Netanyahu was briefly hospitalized last October after feeling unwell during prayers on Yom Kippur - the day observant Jews fast.

Netanyahu is Israel's longest serving leader and has served multiple terms stretching over 15 years in office. His current far-right government, a collection of religious and ultranationalist parties, took office last December.

Yesterday he slammed the burning of bibles in front of the Israeli embassy in Sweden, weeks after police in the country approved a protest which would involve demonstrators burning copies of holy books.

Netanyahu tweeted: "I strongly condemn the decision of the authorities in Sweden to allow the burning of a Bible book in front of the Israeli embassy in the country.

"The State of Israel takes very seriously this shameful decision that damages the Holy of Holies of the Jewish people. The sacred books of all religions must be respected."

Last year, Swedish police reportedly rejected two applications for Quran burnings outside the Turkish and Iraqi embassies.

These were denied because Swedish intelligence said the risk was too great considering the rise in terrorist activity around the same time.

This decision was later the topic of a court case, in which an administrative court ruled it wrong for police to have rejected the applications, with the Court of Appeal reaching a similar conclusion.
