Rishi Sunak surprise honours list announced - from Christopher Nolan to Tory mega-donor

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak doled out damehoods, knighthoods and CBEs to tech experts, Tory MPs and those in the creative industry as he published a surprise list of gongs

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan, Netflix boss Ted Sarandos and a billionaire Tory mega-donor have been handed gongs by Rishi Sunak.

In the surprise honours list, sneaked out before the Easter weekend, Mr Sunak awarded a damehood to Harriett Baldwin, chair of the Treasury select committee, and a knighthood to Food, Farming and Fisheries Minister Mark Spencer. Tory MPs Tracey Crouch and Philip Davies were given a damehood and knighthood respectively.

In a brazen move, Mr Sunak also doled out a knighthood to Egyptian-born billionaire Mohamed Mansour, a Tory mega-donor who gave the party £5million last year.

The tech-obsessed PM handed out knighthoods and CBEs to tech experts including Dr Demis Hassabis, the CEO and co-founder of AI firm Google DeepMind. He also awarded Matthew Clifford, a government adviser on AI and Ian Hogarth, the chair of the AI Safety Institute.

Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas were both awarded a knighthood and damehood respectively for their services to film. It comes just weeks after Nolan won best director at the Oscars for the first time for his film Oppenheimer, which Thomas produced.
