Greggs shops closed across UK after IT glitch left stores unable to accept payments

Greggs customers across the country have shared their frustration this morning because their local shop was forced to close following an IT glitch

Greggs stores across the UK have been hit with an IT glitch which has forced some sites to close this morning.

Customers across the country had complained that their local shop was closed, with reports that sites in Newcastle, Cardiff and Manchester had to shut their doors. It came after McDonald’s, Sainsbury’s, Argos, and Tesco all suffered huge tech issues over the past week. Greggs confirmed there was an issue "affecting payments" this morning but did not disclose how many shops were affected and which sites had to close.

In an update at 10.40am, the bakery chain told The Mirror the "technical issue" had now been resolved for the majority of stores. A Greggs spokesperson said: "We have now resolved the technical issue that affected tills in some of our shops earlier this morning. The majority of shops affected are now able to take card and cash payments again and we expect the issue to be fully resolved shortly. We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused to our customers.”

Fuming customers had taken to X, formerly Twitter, to share their frustration on the situation this morning. One X user posted: "Tills down Greggs - awful start to the day." A second added: "Greggs closed in Manchester, this could cause a riot!" Another shared that their local Greggs could only take cash this morning which meant loads of customers were turned away, they said: "Greggs this morning cash only! Sitting here with my coffee watching almost everyone have to walk out."

According to another X user, other stores were unable to accept cash payments, who said: "Weird experience in Greggs Lewisham just now. System down, so they couldn’t take a card payment. They wouldn’t take cash either. Bizarrely, though, I was told I could still order via Uber. Hello? I’m in the shop in front of you! Not impressed."

Others were puzzled by the frequency of the IT glitches over the last week. One said: "What is happening? #McDonalds, #Sainsburys, #Tesco and now #Greggs have experienced ’IT Issues’ in the last week or so. Is there some kind of common service provider that these companies use? Seems very odd."

Over the weekend, two of the UK’s biggest supermarket chains, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, were hit with technical issues. Sainsbury’s customers were unable to make contactless payments following an overnight software update with the supermarket chain also unable to fulfil the "vast majority" of online deliveries.

Argos, which is owned by Sainsbury’s, was also affected by the same software update. Fellow supermarket chain Tesco also had to cancel some online orders that were due for delivery due to a technical issue. Both chains apologised to customers and later confirmed the issues were unrelated issues but were resolved a few hours later.

Why is Greggs closed?

The bakery chain confirmed it was "experiencing issues" when accepting payments in their stores this morning. The IT glitch seemed to have affected till transactions, as people are reportedly still able to order through apps such as Uber Eats. Some stores could also not take cash payments.

Greggs did not confirm how many stores were affected by the problem. A spokesperson told The Mirror the issue has now been resolved in most stores, but did not confirm how many branches may still be experiencing issues.
