Chelsea defender Jess Carter has caused an online stir after appearing to like social media posts denouncing comments from Emma Hayes regarding player-to-player relationships.

Hayes, who is set to depart the club at the end of the season to manage the USA women's side, claimed that both player-to-coach and player-to-player relationships were 'inappropriate' in a press conference on Thursday, adding that the difficulties of navigating the relationships for managers can prove difficult.

"We're in a professional era now where the expectation in place for players and coaches is such that all of our focus and attention has got to be on having the top standards," Hayes said. The comments arrived after Leicester City suspended manager Willie Kirk over his alleged relationship with a player in his squad.

The remarks from Hayes caused a stir, with many taking umbrage with the Blues boss' sentiments..

The Women's Super League has many high-profile players in relationships, including Chelsea duo Carter and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger along with Arsenal duo Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead.

Another post read: "You don’t have to justify what Emma said btw, it’s a flawed answer no matter how you spin it. There’s a fundamental difference between player-player and player-coach relationships and that’s imbalance of power.

"She could’ve said anything but that."
