'Underrated' Netflix apocalyptic series has fans binge-watching it in one day

Netflix subscribers are falling over themselves to praise an 'underrated' apocalyptic series they're binge-watching in a single day.

With the sheer deluge of films and TV shows available on the world's most popular streaming platform, deciding what to watch can often present quite a challenge. Thank goodness, then, for communities such as Facebook's 'Netflix Bangers' which showcases what other subscribers are enjoying.

And its members are currently buzzing over a series that has been around for some time now – 'The Rain'. Set against an apocalyptic backdrop, this neat 20-part thriller made its debut on Netflix six years ago, marking the platform's first original series from Denmark.

Featuring talented actors such as Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Alba August, and Evin Ahmad, 'The Rain' has garnered a devoted following. The series depicts a world on the brink of collapse due to a rain-borne virus that devastates nearly the entire population of Scandinavia. The story picks up some years after this earth-shattering event, where the familiar world everyone once knew has been well and truly obliterated.

Two Danish siblings emerge from the safety of their bunker, only to find a desolate landscape devoid of civilization. They join forces with a group of fellow young survivors, embarking on a perilous journey across the abandoned land in search of any signs of life. While the survivors initially believe they are freed from the societal norms of the past, they soon realise that even in this post-apocalyptic reality, they must grapple with the timeless challenges of love, jealousy, and other coming-of-age dilemmas.

Professing their love for the series, one user took to Netflix Bangers to say: "If you like apocalyptic movies/shows the series The Rain on Netflix is a good watch".

While another said: "This is one of the best series I’ve seen". "I binge-watched series one in a single day. I just find it so engrossing. Definitely underrated!" claimed a third.

"The Rain is a great watch. Excellent young Danish and Swedish cast, including Alba August, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Evin Ahmad and Ardalan Esmaili. Loved it," another said.

A final proclaimed: "Great series. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this show."

With three series in total to wallow in, it's easy to become submerged in The Rain's gripping narrative. While critics generally felt the show ran out of steam towards the end, there was a general consensus that season one was particularly enthralling.

Sean T. Collins, from the Decider, wrote: "It's not so much that The Rain breaks new ground for the postapocalyptic-dystopia narrative. It's simply that it shows how much more ground there is to explore in that great big quarantine zone of a genre."

While The Daily Beast's Nick Schager said: "Its confident storytelling provides plenty of hope."

Netflix leads the market

Despite the economic downturn, business is booming for Netflix. In fact, it is so far ahead in the market that every other streamer is effectively battling for second place. With around 250 million subscribers, Netflix has more viewers than Disney Plus and Max (formerly HBO Max) combined. According to Statista, the top ten global streamers list looks like this:

1. Netflix: 247.15million users

2. Prime Video: 200m
