Chelsea have agreed a deal with Brentford for the services of Bernardo Cueva, who will become their new set-piece coach from next season.

The Blues have endured another underwhelming campaign in the Premier League, this time under Mauricio Pochettino. The former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain head coach has failed to transform Chelsea's fortunes, with the Londoners currently languishing in the bottom half of the league.

With Chelsea already out of the running to qualify for the Champions League, focus has slowly started to turn to next season. And the Stamford Bridge hierarchy already have an agreement in place to make Cueva their first acquisition of the summer.

The Athletic have outlined that Cueva will continue in his current role with Brentford until the end of the season, where he will then head up an area of the Blues' coaching team which is expected to be strengthened further ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Cueva, 36, is held in high esteem by both Brentford and within the game as a whole. He joined the Bees from Chivas in his native Mexico in 2020 and has played an integral role in their ascent over recent years.

The role Cueva will fill has been vacant ever since Anthony Barry swapped Stamford Bridge for Bayern Munich in order to reunite with Thomas Tuchel last April. His appointment has been approved by Pochettino with co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley leading an off-field rebuild.

Pochettino himself has come under pressure in recent weeks as a result of Chelsea's poor form, with some fans even chanting the name of former boss Jose Mourinho in a recent match. His position is not currently believed to be under threat, however.

Chelsea beat Newcastle 3-2 on Monday night to ease the pressure which had been building on the beleaguered Argentine - and he admitted that the victory was needed to lift the mood at Stamford Bridge.

He said post-match: “Winning the game was important for us and for our fans, to be a little bit more calm. The most important thing is to try to translate reality. We are all agreed that the fans are right to complain. But we are right to not give up.

“It was great to see the players fighting, performing, OK, not maybe great but caring about the team. Good credit to everybody.”
