Mason Mount's move to Manchester United has hardly lived up to the expectation so far, amid reports that his decision to join the Red Devils was not for 'football reasons'.

The England international made headlines when he opted to call time on his Chelsea career last summer in favour of a switch to 'big six' rivals United for a fee of £60million. Contract talks between Mount and those at the top of the Blues hierarchy broke down, presenting the Red Devils with the chance to swoop.

United weren't the only ones keen on prying Mount away from Stamford Bridge, with Arsenal and Liverpool also interested. However, Erik ten Hag's side won the race for his signature and secured the midfielder on a five-year deal with the option for a further year.

Unfortunately for Mount, the 25-year-old has had to deal with persistent injury issues since arriving and as a result, has made just 12 appearances across all competitions this term. His most recent outing came all the way back in November, prior to a training ground injury that has cost him the last four months.

To add insult to literal injury in Mount's case, an unnamed source believed to be close to United has suggested that the player's motive behind the move were not football reasons, as per the Manchester Evening News. It is believed that the ex-Chelsea ace is still sensitive about the manner of his Blues exit.

United met Chelsea at Old Trafford at the back end of last year, but Mount missed out through injury. That didn't stop the travelling fans from referring to him as a 'money-grabbing w****r' in their chants.

Following four months on the sidelines, Mount is finally back in full training with the rest of the United squad. There's every chance he is fit enough to feature in their trip to Stamford Bridge in early April.

Prior to last Saturday's 2-0 win over Everton, Ten Hag was asked about how near Mount is to a return. The Dutchman revealed: " Mason Mount I think he is in a good spell now and he will return shortly, I think after the international break."

Ten Hag will be desperate to keep Mount fit for the season's final furlong as United try to sneak into the Champions League qualification places. His side currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, having lost a whopping 11 league games already this term.
