Ricky Tomlinson threw The One Show into chaos on Tuesday when he appeared to swear live on air.

The Royle Family star, 84, was regaling hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas about his time on the smash-hit show in which he starred opposite Sue Johnstone. Recalling working with his co-star, who plays his beleaguered wife Barb, he said: "When we met, I'd done one job and I bluffed my way into it - a movie with Roland Joffe. He upset me in the audition and I told him to stick it. I hadn't long been out of jail and he was winding me up in the audition and I told him to stick it and was walking down the stairs and he shouted, 'I know who you are, you're Ricky Tomlinson'. And I'm shouting..."

It was then that Ricky mouthed "f*** off" in full view of the camera as he shook his fist in the air as though to express his anger from the encounter.

The episode has since been pulled from the BBC's catch-up service, iPlayer, after fans took to X in shock over what they'd seen. Several were unimpressed that The One Show had failed to acknowledge or apologise for the mishap, despite it being before the watershed.

Taking to X - formerly Twitter - one viewer said: "Lip readers currently up in arms watching Ricky Tomlinson #TheOneShow." Another fumed: "@BBCTheOneShow Do you brief your guests re inappropriate language? I realise that it's difficult to control guests on a live show but there wasn't even an apology after Ricky Tomlinson swore this evening." Before someone else added: "Ricky Tomlinson mouthing f-off [blushing emoji]."

Despite no formal apology, another viewer suggested Alex and Jermaine were desperate to cut the interview short as they shared: "They're desperate to try and cut Ricky off #theoneshow."

Ricky had been on the programme discussing the launch of his brand new programme with Sue - 12 years on from the seasoned stars playing Jim and Barb. Speaking about their travelogue for the More4 show, he said the longtime pals embark on a journey around some of their favourite destinations and landmarks across the UK. One of the locations of the series is Shrewsbury Prison, where Ricky was held in the 1970s. The actor was jailed in 1973 for two years during the national building workers’ strike after he was convicted of conspiring to intimidate and affray.

The three-part special will also see the pair visit Brookside Close and reveal how they both ended up on the Channel 4 soap as Bobby and Sheila Grant.

The Mirror has contacted the BBC for comment on this story.

* Ricky, Sue and a Trip or Two airs on More4 at 9pm on Tuesday, March 19.
