Manchester United chiefs have met with Barcelona over a possible deal for Mason Greenwood, according to reports in Spain.

The forward's future at Old Trafford appears to be over following an internal investigation. Greenwood was suspended in January 2022 after he was arrested on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman. He was further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill but all charges were later dropped.

Greenwood was sent out on loan to La Liga outfit Getafe and has impressed with the Madrid-based outfit. He's scored eight times and has continued to influence games, catching the attention of some of Spain's biggest sides - Barcelona among them.

Marca reports that senior figures from Manchester have met with Barcelona sporting director Deco to discuss a possible deal. Atletico Madrid are also keen on Greenwood with United making it clear they want £43million for the player who came through their academy.

United chiefs chiefs John Murtough and Matt Hargreaves were recently spotted in Barcelona. Footage showed them meeting with Deco. Frank Trimboli, the head of football at the Base Soccer agency, and Spain-based Base agent Federico Massai, who lives in Madrid, were also present.

Despite that the Manchester Evening News did report that Murtough and Hargreaves were only in Barcelona for a routine meeting. Murtough travelled to the Spanish city outside of the transfer window last season and has also met sporting directors at Juventus and AC Milan.

An unnamed club from Saudi Arabia has expressed an interest in signing Greenwood but the 22-year-old is looking to play for a team in the Champions League, which rules out a switch to the Saudi Pro League.

Greenwood has not played for the Red Devils since he was suspended by the club in January 2022. Since then there have been major changes in the hierarchy with Sir Jim Ratcliffe coming on board and already making wholesale changes. The Ineos billionaire has discussed the Greenwood situation, suggesting he will make his own decision.

He said recently: "We will make a decision, correct. All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not? He’s a Manchester United footballer, so we are in charge of football.

“So the answer is 'yeah, we have to make decisions. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made. He’s on-loan obviously, but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on, so we will do that.

"The process will be: understand the facts not the hype, and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values, which is basically is he a good guy or not? Could he play sincerely for Manchester United well, would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?"
