A daughter shared the heartbreaking moment her dying dad revealed why he had been so cruel towards her a decade ago. The incident, while the pair were driving in the parent's truck, had been eating up ever since and was the last time she'd spoken to him before finding out he was terminally ill.

In a Reddit post, she wrote: "My dad passed away two weeks ago from cancer. In the last few weeks of his life, he spent it in a hospice surrounded by family. Me and my dad we didn’t have a warm relationship, or a relationship at all."

After turning 18 and graduating, she moved away from home to start a successful new life and only ever kept in contact with her mom and siblings, plus a few close friends. The last time she had any communication with her dad was before she left for college.

She wrote: "The last time I spoke with my dad when he wasn’t sick was when I had a pregnancy scare before I left for college. I was in my dad’s truck, he was driving me to my doctors appointment, he looked at me with a strange look and told me I would be a terrible mother and that he wishes that I wouldn’t be pregnant because of that.

"I never told anyone this but my boyfriend. It stung that my dad would tell me that. Something that I think of everyday since then." Years later she received a phone call from her sister telling her that their dad was dying and that her family wanted her to come back home and be there for him.

The post continued: "I was hesitant at first but I wanted to hear from him again. So I went home and surprised him. So I went home and surprised him." To her surprise, her dad apologised for treating her badly.

"When I walked into that room, he held out his hand which I took. He said he was sorry for everything. That he wished he treated me better. At this point I was crying, telling him I needed him and whatnot. I asked him why he treated me differently from my siblings," she added.

He then told her the truth about why he had been so awful to her in the truck 10 years ago. She said: "He told me I reminded him of his mother, whom left the family for another. That I looked like her, talked like her and acted liked her. But I wouldn’t be like a mother like her, that I’m kind and full of love, that he hated what he told me on that drive. I hugged him and accepted his apology."

Her dad died "peacefully in his sleep" the day after the emotional reunion, but at least the daughter finally had an answer after all these years. "A day after I arrived, my dad peacefully went away in his sleep. After ten years of wondering why, I finally got my answer. I keep thinking that we should’ve talked many years ago so that we could have had more time together. I’ll miss my dad," she wrote.

One user - whose supportive words reflected much of the sentiment across the dozens of replies - wrote: "Don't beat yourself up for not talking sooner. It may have taken him to be on his death bed to finally let that out and realize how much he regretted it. Being on his death bed may have been the only reason he tried to make amends with you. It happens a lot. I'm glad both of you got closure."
