Injured Greg Rutherford says fiancée was wrong to claim he's 'recovering well'

Dancing On Ice star Greg Rutherford has revealed that his fiancée 'got it wrong' when she said that he was recovering well from an agonising injury.

The sports star, 37, has revealed that he is still 'very sore' and feeling 'very tired' after a freak injury meant that he had to pull out of the Dancing On Ice final on Sunday. Greg was forced to throw in the towel just hours before the live show.

He was due to perform with professional skating partner Vanessa James in a bid to be crowned the 2024 champion, competing against Ryan Thomas, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire. However, just hours before the final, Greg's professional skating partner Vanessa, 36, posted a photo on Instagram, announcing they were on the way to the hospital after Greg was injured during rehearsals.

Vanessa penned: "Unfortunately Greg has sustained a significant injury this morning at rehearsals and won’t be able to perform tonight. We are on our way to the hospital for Greg to get examined further and receive the treatment he needs."

Following the news of his untimely injury, Greg's fiancée, Susie Verrill took to Instagram to share an update on her future husband-to-be as she said that Greg was recovering well. Susie also insisted that Greg was doing 'a lot better' since his injury occurred on Sunday.

However, Greg has now set the record straight, admitting that he's not doing as well as his fiancée has made out. Responding to her post, Greg said: "No I'm not." Susie then changed her statement and wrote: "Ok ignore, would like everyone to know he's actually in a lot of pain."

Greg shared another update with fans on Monday as he filmed himself from his hospital bed. "Seen a specialist today, I've got some scans tomorrow, and then I will know more about what's going on, and what's happening," he said. "I'm very sore and very tired so I'm going to get an early night tonight. But again I cannot believe the amount of lovely messages I've had so thanks very much. I'll update everybody once I know what the next step is. This is grim."

The heartbroken Dancing On Ice star then shared a snippet of the incredible performance he would have made alongside Vanessa if they had made it to the final. Posting a video of their Bolero routine on Instagram, Greg admitted that he was devastated to have missed the opportunity to perform it in real time - but hopes that he and Vanessa will one day be able to recreate the dance routine again.

"Something that I really wish I could have performed… #Bolero. I'm almost 36 hours since the injury and watching the videos of what could have been. It’s bloody hard to take at this point as I know we could have shown something exciting and new with our final performances.

"Of course the Bolero isn’t a given and I’ll post our showcase at some point too… I haven’t shown the end as I’m determined to actually perform it with Vanessa one day for everyone to see," Greg wrote alongside the video.

"I’m really proud of what we achieved on the show. This take was from Saturday morning and we were marking for the double twist… the full program was truly beautiful. I’m a bit heartbroken at the moment. Do you think me and Vanessa should get together again and perform it live one day?" he asked his followers.

Quick to comment on Greg's emotional post was Dancing On Ice winner Ryan Thomas who joked that if Greg had not of sustained his injury, he would have won the show if he were to have had performed the Bolero routine.

Ryan joked: "I'm glad you didn’t do it with that performance otherwise I would of lost my trophy."
