A man has been left mystified after hearing what his transgender friend has decided to name herself following her transition. He explained how he has been supporting his friend through her male-to-female transition - and is happily watching on as she becomes her true self.

But he couldn't help but question her decision when hearing what she wants to be referred to as now she is identifying as female. Taking to Reddit, he said: "My friend transitioned but I found out she's naming herself Mildred. I want to be supportive but f***ing Mildred. This is my biggest issue with this entire process. She could have given herself an awesome name but Mildred. Really? I'm going to have to call you Mildred, dude."

While most users shared their thoughts on the name Mildred, others explained the process some transgender people take when renaming themselves. One user said: "Imagine being able to pick any name out of the endless possibilities that are out there for yourself, and you choose f***ing Mildred."

Another user added: "I find it both hilarious yet refreshing to see someone complaining about a trans person, not for being trans, but for choosing a bad name." A third user said: "I've heard that trans people often choose names that are more popular in the generation below them because they would choose a name for themselves that is similar to what they might have named their children, e.g. Caitlin is more popular for women in their 30s whereas Caitlin Jenner is in her 70s. I know a lot of 'grandma names' like Edith, Violet, etc. are popular for baby girls nowadays so Mildred could be one of those?"

One more user added: "As a trans person, I find this so funny, naming trends/stereotypes for trans people are widely different when looking at trans women who tend to go for 'grandma' style names, to looking at trans men who go for names off the top 50 popular boy name lists. There are hundreds of Kais, Elliotts, Daniels, Theos, Aidens, etc., and then nonbinary people who spin around in a room, and whatever they end up pointing at is their name i.e. Sock, Lamp, Arson, etc."
