A horrified family have described the moment a car smashed into their home while a mother and baby were inside.

Natalie Jacobs and seven-month-old baby Samuel were in the front room of their terraced house when a BMW smashed into the property around breakfast time.

Police were called to the scene of the crash on The Broadway, Minster, on Sheppey, where the force of the impact had demolished the house’s front wall and hurled their iron fence through the front room window.

Mrs Jacobs, 33, had just sent her nine-year-old daughter Poppy to school just before the car collided with the property, at 8am. She then rung husband Michael to tell him the shocking news.

Michael, 39, said: “The first thing I knew was when I got a phone call from my wife. It’s a miracle no one was seriously injured or killed, although there was glass from the smashed window everywhere.”

Mrs Jacobs’ Ford B-Max car which was parked in the driveway beside the house was pelted with bricks which had been sent flying from the couple’s demolished front wall by the force of the impact.

“We don’t know exactly what happened,” Mr Jacobs added. “The police have all the details. Apparently, the driver of the car is okay. Many drivers go far too fast along this stretch of road. There should be speed cameras along here to get them to slow down.”

An iron railing was catapulted through one of the windows and the front door was left hanging off its hinges after the smash. The BMW had been travelling in the direction of Sheerness.

His father-in-law Howard Walker, 60, agreed. He said: “My wife’s car was parked outside the house three weeks ago and a drunk driver ploughed into it. I agree there should be speed cameras here.”

The house is opposite, The Maples, is home to many elderly residents. One person, who did not want to be named, said: “The noise of the crash woke me up. I am terrified at the speed of the cars which tear down this road. Some use it as a race track.”
