Car expert warns of costly de-icing mistake that could damage your windscreen

As the weather gets colder once more, many people will be waking up and heading outside to find their cars covered in ice.

This can be frustrating, especially when you're running late for work and need to get going in a hurry.

It's crucial to make sure you clear your windshield so you can see clearly and drive safely, but some people may end up rushing the job and damaging their car in the process.

Auto experts from Dick Lovett have shared their top tips for de-icing your car with The Mirror, including the mistakes you'll want to avoid that could prove pretty costly.

The experts warned that there were certain tools you should avoid using on your windscreen as they can cause damage.

"Do not use boiling water directly on the windscreen to remove frost, the rapid temperature change could cause the glass to crack. Instead, heat your windscreen from theyou inside of the car, and use a scraper, or de-icer," they explained.

"Stick to ice-scrapers to remove frost, using sharp objects could scratch your windscreen."

According to Autoglass, a scratched windscreen can cost you a lot as it would need to be fully replaced, as polishing out a scratch can "compromise the structural strength of a windscreen".

"Sure, it looks good cosmetically, but you’ll be left with a thinner area that's weaker and more prone to damage."

And scratches aren't the only thing that could hurt your wallet. The experts continued to give examples of de-icing mistakes that could land you with a hefty fine of up to £2,500.

"Don't leave your car unattended while defrosting the windscreen. Some local authorities charge a £20 fixed penalty notice (FPN) for emission offences and stationary idling under The Road Traffic (Vehicle Emissions) (Fixed Penalty) (England) Regulations 2002. Also, it's much safer, as being with your car reduces the risk of theft.

"You should also ensure your windscreen is fully defrosted before heading off, and all snow removed from the vehicle. If you’re judged to be 'using a vehicle in a dangerous condition' you can be fined £2,500 and given three penalty points on your licence."

And finally the team from Dick Lovett shared a few tips for de-icing swiftly, including a visor hack and towel trick.

They added: "Place an old towel or blanket across the windscreen the night before cold weather – this can work well if you don’t own a windscreen frost cover.

"Switch on your engine and turn your blowers to full and the temperature to high. Point them at the windscreen and switch on your A/C (if you have it) to keep the air dry. In addition, put your sun visors down to stop the airflow while the blowers are on - it creates a faster defrost on your windshield."
