Simon Cowell has opened up about parenthood in a new interview.

The Britain's Got Talent judge, 64, and his fiancée Lauren Silverman, 46, are parents to Eric, 10, together. The couple welcomed their son on Valentine's Day in 2014 and Simon has spoken about the way his life has changed since then.

He discussed being a parent with OK! magazine following the Together For Short Lives annual gala last week. Simon is a patron of the charity, which aims to "help every child and family living with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition get the very best care and support they can".

The evening was hosted by Simon and at one point he gave a speech about the charity. He recalled thinking at the time that he "could not cope if anything happened" to Eric. He went on to discuss a recent experience as a parent.

Simon had toured a potential new school for Eric on the day, saying: "It was great fun, but it reminded me of my own school days. I would get that Sunday night feeling at 7pm – what excuse could I come up with for the following day to avoid it? I'd try every trick in the book. Fortunately, Eric's not like that; we're in a good place with him."

The former X Factor judge also shared: "Even before I had Eric, I knew the work done [by the charity] was incredible. I remember going to a hospice for the first time and I was very nervous. In my mind, I had imagined somewhere that was very grey and very sad yet it was the exact opposite."

He continued: "These kids are not in a great place, but the charity somehow creates a world where they are happy. They look after the children and their families. It's amazing what they do. I can say, as a parent, that it would be the worst nightmare to find out your kid is ill and then to find it might be terminal. How do you navigate that without a charity like this?".

During the interview, Simon gave an insight into his life with Eric. He said about his son: "He has started taking [drum] lessons and we have bought him a kit. He has great timing and reads music and it's brilliant watching him play in his bedroom. He looks like a little rock star. Although thank God it's not the violin! That would have been a no-no."

Asked if he's a "strict" parent, Simon said: "I'm a bit of a softie, but I do insist on good manners [...] But I am very careful with him and social media. He doesn't have a mobile phone. I don't have one either, so that makes it easier and I would never let him loose on an iPad or computer without supervision."

Simon added that they play football together, revealing that Eric is a supporter of Arsenal football club. He continued: "We [also] have a couple of pinball machines. I love his company."

He further commented: "Life before Eric and life now is totally different. When I got the call I was going to be a father I thought I was too old at 53, but it's amazing. I see life through a different lens. Plus, I get to watch all those great Disney movies all over again."
