Ivy can be a very invasive plant if not dealt with quickly, and one gardener has shared the easiest way to kill it for good - and it costs just 60p.

Due to the rich green leaves, English ivy is able to grow in areas with limited light, meaning it can outgrow many garden plants. It also supports its growth with aerial roots, and when ivy grows on properties, it can cause structual damage of the roots penetrate into cracks and joints.

If you are trying to kill the invasive plant, keen gardeners have offered up some advice online. One man took to the popular Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page to get some advice from fellow green thumbed gardeners on the best way to tackle the ivy. He asked: "What's a good way to get rid of unwanted ivy?"

People were quick to share their tips, and it seemed as if the most common way was to cut the plant down and use bleach on it, the Express reports. One Facebook user suggested: "Cut it off at the base, cut slits in the base, pour neat bleach over the stump, then cover it with a bag and tape it up to protect wildlife from the bleach," and added: "The plant will take the bleach down to its roots and kill it completely."

Another gardening fan echoed this and said: "I have killed very old invasive ivy that has crawled up next doors house and literally thought would be impossible to get rid of. A large bottle of bleach killed the lot within days. It works," and a third said: "Chop it at the base and remove as much as you can, then add bleach over it."

One Facebook user said it's the "only way" to kill it for good and commented: "Cut it as close to the ground and pour bleach on the roots. It will burn it and the ivy will die. Don't pull off the large branches of a wall, cut off at different parts and it will fade and die off in a few days."

However it's important to note that you should take care when pouring the bleach as it will kill any other plants almost instantly if it comes into contact with them. You can buy bleach for just 60p from Aldi or 70p from Ocado.
