Drivers were left stunned and vehicles were damaged after 'large stones' fell off a lorry travelling along a busy stretch of UK motorway.

The dramatic incident caused chaos on the M5 northbound between Cullompton and Exeter in Devon this morning, causing the road to be blocked. Several vehicles were damaged by the stones, but thankfully no-one was injured.

Police and National Highways attended the scene at 10.10am, closing the road for recovery and clean-up work. The M5 is now reopen and traffic has cleared. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police told Devon Live: "Police were called at around 10.10am on Monday 11 March after reports of large stones falling off the back of a lorry on the M5 near Cullompton.

"Several vehicles were reportedly damaged by the rocks in the road. Nobody is believed to have been injured. Recovery and clear up are ongoing."
