Robert Downey Jr thanked his lawyer for bailing him out of jail after winning his first-ever Oscar at last night's Academy Awards.

The Hollywood star scooped Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, finally winning an Oscar after 30 years in showbusiness. Taking to the stage at Sunday's star-studded ceremony live in Los Angeles, Robert thanked his legal representative for "trying to get me insured and bailing me out of the hoosgow".

"I'd like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order," the 58-year-old actor began his speech. "I'd like to thank my veterinarian, I meant wife, Susan Downey over there. She found me a snarling rescue pet and you loved me back to life."

He continued: "That's why I'm here. Here's my little secret, I needed this job more than it needed me. Chris knew it. I stand there before you a better man because of it. What we do is meaningful and the stuff we decide to make it important." Robert praised his entire team, stylist and lawyer of over 40 years, adding: "The half of which he spent trying to get me insured and bailing me out of the hoosgow, thanks bro."

Robert, who starred as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer, won Best Supporting Actor over nominees Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Ryan Gosling (Barbie) and Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things).

He's been nominated for two Oscars before for performances in 1992's Chaplin and 2008's Tropic Thunder, but never actually won. He has however had great success at other glitzy awards ceremonies this year, adding his Academy Award to his shelf featuring a Golden Globe, BAFTA Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Oppenheimer received 13 nominations at this year's Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Director for Nolan. The night wasn't all smooth sailing for Robert though as earlier in the evening he appeared to clash with the host.

Jimmy Kimmel took to the stage inside the Dolby theatre to host the 96th Academy Awards, delivering a classic opening monologue full of jokes. The comedian targeted several celebrity guests after warning earlier in the week that nothing was "off limits".

He made a joke about Robert and his past struggles with substance abuse within minutes of the ceremony beginning. "This is the highest point of Robert Downey Jr's long and illustrious career...well one of the highest points..." He started.

As the live cameras switched to see Robert's reaction, the MCU star touched the tip of his nose, leading Jimmy to ask: "Was that too on the nose or was that a drug motion you made? " Likely sensing the tension, Jimmy quickly moved on to compliment the actor saying: "Look at this guy, he's so handsome, so talented."

But things soon took another turn as Jimmy stuttered: "Is that an acceptance speech in your pocket or do you just have a very rectangular penis?" Taken aback by the cheeky comment, Robert shocked fans as he simply shrugged.

"Robert Downey Jr if you want to Will Smith slap Jimmy Kimmel I don’t blame you," one Twitter (X) user joked as the awkward moment aired, with another adding: "robert downey jr is absolutely going to k*ll jimmy kimmel." A third declared: "I usually love Kimmel but those Robert Downey Jr jokes were cheap as fuck. Not cool. #TheOscars."
