Legendary film actor Al Pacino left Oscars viewers baffled as he announced Oppenheimer had won Best Picture but failed to mention the other nominees.

Taking to the stage, The Godfather actor said: "Best Picture…uh, I have to go to the envelope for that. And I will. Here it comes. And my eyes see Oppenheimer?” Viewers were left perplexed by the awkward moment and took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts. One fan said: "I’m obsessed with the way Al Pacino announced Oppenheimer as Best Picture. couldn’t have been more chaotic or confusing lol."

Another added: "'My eyes see Oppenheimer?' Al Pacino with an all time #Oscars moment." Someone else commented: "Al Pacino was like, 'I ain’t standing here while you read out 10 nominees bro. Oppenheimer come get your s**t'." A fourth wrote: "Al Pacino gives the most anti-climactic oscar win ever lmaoo." A viewer quipped: "What a way to end the #Oscars with Al Pacino," as another shared: "Al Pacino I love you but reading that with no build up of the nominees ?"

Someone stated: "Maybe asking Al Pacino to present Best Picture wasn't the greatest idea." Typically, all the nominations for Best Picture are read out before the winner is announced. The crowd paused before they realised Pacino had announced the winner as they were waiting for the full list to be read out.

Oppenheimer's film producer Emma Thomas and director Christopher Nolan quickly realised they had won and headed to the stage to accept the prestigious award. During Nolan's acceptance speech, the famous filmmaker said: "Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. We don’t know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think I’m a meaningful part of it means the world to me.” After a sweet shoutout to his wife, he concluded: "Thank you to those who have believed in me my whole career."

The film faced strong competition from Greta Gerwig's Barbie at the box office last summer. Barbie and Oppenheimer became the first and third highest-grossing movies in the world in 2023. However, Barbie was snubbed by the award ceremony as Greta didn't receive a Best Director nomination and Margot Robbie failed to receive a Best Actress nod.

Nolan's Oppenheimer was a frontrunner receiving nominations across 13 different categories. The movie brought home an astounding eight Oscars by the end of the night including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Costume design.

The historical biopic is a three-hour epic tale about the world's race to build the atomic bomb, following the brilliant yet troubled American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by actor Cillian Murphy. He worked on the Manhattan Project to create the bomb and the devastating effects he experienced after witnessing the world's first nuclear explosion.
