Manchester United reignited their hopes of booking their place in the Champions League following a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford helped earn the Red Devils three vital points as they ended a run of back-to-back defeats in the Premier League. It was a result that kept them in sixth, still behind Tottenham and Aston Villa ahead of the final nine top-flight matches.

Attention for United will now turn to the FA Cup quarter-final next weekend when Erik ten Hag's side host Liverpool for a place at Wembley. With the Red Devils not in Europe and all-but out of the race for the title, the FA Cup is their most realistic chance to win a major trophy this season.

Here is the latest news from Old Trafford.

Evans praised by Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag has explained why Jonny Evans is such an "important" member of the United squad, after impressing during Saturday's 2-0 win over Everton.

The experienced centre-back re-joined the Red Devils last year after leaving Leicester following the expiry of his contract. And he has since become a crucial member of the United set-up, having started 15 matches this season. Evans has filled in after injuries to Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

"Oh yeah, [I have been] very [impressed]," Ten Hag said about Evans in his post-Everton press conference. "We are so pleased we signed the fifth centre-back because normally, you say: 'Why five centre-backs in the squad?' But you see, we are so happy we did this.

"As you see, his performance across the season, he's such an important player for this squad. [He will] always be there when he’s needed and give good performances."

Mainoo set for new contract

Kobbie Mainoo is set to treble his Manchester United wage to £60,000 a week.

The 18-year-old, who only triggered a new deal to take his wages to £20,000 a week when he made his 10th first-team appearance, is going to be rewarded with another pay rise. Mainoo has forced his way into the United squad after making his first Premier League start back in November.

Mainoo's current contract runs until 2027, although United have the option of a further 12-month extension. But talks have already started about persuading Mainoo to extend until 2030. And the new deal will include a number of triggers that will make him one of the club's highest earners.

Rooney sends damning assessment

Wayne Rooney doesn't believe United have enough about them to finish in the top four.

Although it wasn't the most vintage performance from the Red Devils, they did enough to earn a crucial victory in their bid for the Champions League. And Rooney isn't sure whether United will pip Aston Villa and Tottenham to a place in the top four by the end of the season.

Rooney told TNT Sports: "No, it’s not sustainable and I think we’ve seen that throughout the seasons. I don’t think they’ll make the top four because they’ll have to win almost every game from now on and they’ve been so inconsistent that I can’t see them doing that.

"Even today, they had 20-odd chances against them but there were no clear cut ones for Everton. [But] even then, it’s too many, too many chances for teams to punish them."
