We all know how important cleaning our bathrooms is to keep them sanitary and get rid of unwanted mould, and avoiding doing so could cause harm to your health.

Homeowners are now being warned of bathroom odours which could indicate a mould and bacteria infestation, which could have a significant impact on health. It's no secret that nasty smells can linger around bathrooms, but it is important to recognise harmful scents so you can banish the cause of them.

According to experts, a musty smell could mean there is a bathroom leak while a rotten vegetable odour could indicate mould growth. Bathroom experts at Posh.co.uk have also revealed that smells of rotten eggs and cabbage are signs of a bigger problem and should never be ignored.

Andy Ellis from Posh.co.uk said: "It is no secret that bathrooms can harbour some nasty odours, but if the smells seem distinct and out of place, it could indicate something more serious. Signs of a more threatening presence lurking in the bathroom include the smell of rotten eggs, which could mean harmful bacteria is growing in the water systems."

He added: "A lingering musty smell could also mean there is a hidden leak somewhere which could be increasing water bill prices. It can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where the odours are coming from, so if the usual cleaning routine isn’t working it is well worth calling in a professional."

According to Posh.co.uk, there are five bathroom smells you should never ignore. Read on to find out which scents you should be careful of.

Rotting vegetables

If your bathroom smells like rotting vegetables this could be a sign that black mould is present. Many describe the smell as earthy, and it is often compared to the smell of rotting vegetables. This must be cleaned as soon as possible as breathing in this air over long periods can result in dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and nausea.

Rotten eggs

Have you smelt rotten eggs in your bathroom? This could be down to a thin, slimy layer of bacteria called Biofilm that can grow from all the water, soap, shampoos, and body oils that go down the drain.

This accumulates inside water systems and pipes, causing the sink and shower drains to smell like rotten eggs. It is important to tackle Biofilm because it can lead to harmful bacteria. This can be done with baking soda, vinegar and warm water.

Sewage

If your bathroom smells like sewage this could be down to an accumulation of hair, dead skin, shower gel and other debris clogging the shower. The build-up will cause mould and bacteria to grow and make the smell worse. Make sure to clear out your drain as often as you can.

Musty

Tale-tale signs of a hidden bathroom leak could be a musty smell. A hidden water leak can lead to water damage in the bathroom and surrounding rooms, as well as affecting water bill prices and the structural integrity of the home.

‌Cabbage

An unpleasant cabbage smell could be because the sewage system has drainage issues. This could be because there is a bend in a pipe that is trapping water in a confined space, preventing sewer gasses from escaping through.
