Every week there is a video telling everybody they aren't doing something right or efficiently and this week is no different, as one cleaner has lifted the lid on how everyone is cleaning their sinks wrong.

The expert said that those using sponges to wash down their sinks were not cleaning it properly. Amber Elise, who posts online under the username @bubblesandbuckets, shares cleaning hack videos with her followers, offering nuggets of information that will help keep homes tidy and clean.

In a recent video, which has amassed over 700 likes, the cleaning whizz says using sponges to wipe down countertops is not a great idea because they harbour "harmful bacteria." Instead, Amber, who owns her own cleaning business, says when cleaning your sink you should use a microfibre cloth.

Amber says when disinfecting your sink, it's best to read the label but also don't be in a rush to wipe away the products you spray.

She said: "If you're disinfecting your countertops, be sure to read the label on the bottle. Usually, the product has to sit for five/10 minutes before it disinfects." However, Amber also warns against creating a mess by using too many sprays and cleaners.

One thankful fan said: "Leaving cleaners to sit for a bit is such a great tip." Whilst another said: "I didn't know I was supposed to let the product sit a little while to disinfect. Thank you!" A third commented: "Make the sponges clean by microwaving them while damp for a minute. It was a tip from my microbiology professor."

While many cleaning enthusiasts will be gearing up for a spring clean and hacks can be useful, not every cleaning hack from social media is something that should be taken on board. Another cleaning lover has said that not all cleaning hacks are useful and some could even be damaging.

The home hack expert, best known for her TikTok page Not The Worst Cleaner, controversially shared a video of viral hacks that weren't as effective as they were said to be. Brogan warned that you should never put washing up liquid in your air fryer along with hot water and cook it to clean inside. She explained the soap solution will go directly into the fan and electrical components - causing overheating and a potential fire hazard.

Brogan also warned against the viral hack of putting laundry detergent on a cloth and wrapping it around a pan lid to clean sofas. She said, "Honestly it's just spreading dirt around, you can't scrub, and it's not lifting any product." Detergents are highly concentrated so it will leave behind residue and destroy fabric over time."
