Getting a little help around the house is always appreciated - but when it comes to your mother-in-law making it overbearing, it's not always as welcomed.

This is the ordeal one woman is facing, as she claimed her mother-in-law "won't stop" tidying around the house, and admitted the "help" is irritating her more so than helping her out.

As she revealed she doesn't have the "easiest" relationship with her, the final straw was when she came home to a completely rearranged living room - and claims her mother-in-law always expects to be thanked for the unnecessary work.

She took to Mumsnet to vent about the situation and said: "I find her overbearing and "helpful" in a way that totally irritates me. She does whatever she wants and expects to be thanked for it."

She explained that her husband's parents had come over to borrow some tools, and her mother-in-law had said she was coming to help "clean and iron" her husband's shirts, which the wife claimed he's perfectly capable of doing himself. The post continued: "My husband told her that she's welcome to come over, but she won't be cleaning."

However, she didn't listen had "tidied up" the living room but instead had made it look like a "tornado swept through" and claimed that nothing was in the right place. She'd even moved the furniture around for "better afternoon light".

However, this infuriated the wife when she returned home as she had "better things to do than arrange my living room back to the way it should be". Making her feeling clear, she shared how her mother-in-law now keeps texting her trying to tell her she just wanted to help.

"I've ignored her so far, don't even know what I should answer so it doesn't turn into a huge drama with her in the leading role of victim. She still doesn't understand that she did something wrong, it's like talking to a teenager."

It wasn't the first time this had happened as she explained: "We've been turning down her 'help' for years. Politely at first, then with a categorical no. She used to listen, but since we got married and bought a house, it's like she doesn't give a s**t anymore, just comes over and does what she wants."

She recalled the time when her mother-in-law mowed down the couple's wildflower meadow and said "You don't want those ugly weeds in front". The wife said: "She knew that it was supposed to stay, but she didn't like it, we would not bend when she complained about it being ugly, so she went and killed it."

Other times include her organising kitchen drawers and cupboards and ironing clothes, which the woman claimed she had destroyed in the process. "Every such incident is followed by a conversation with my husband and (sometimes) father-in-law. Every such conversation ends in tears and with statements like 'but I only want to help' and 'I didn't want to do anything wrong'."

Mumsnet users flocked to the comments with suggestions to make the help stop, as one person advised: "She sounds like a nightmare. In future don't let her be alone in your house because she can't be trusted no matter what anyone says to her," and another echoed: "I'd be furious. However, the best possible thing you can do is don't respond to her texts. Tell your husband to be clear that if she does this again contact will be reduced. You are both furious."
