Jeremy Clarkson teases Millionaire? contestant as they gamble on £250k question
Fans of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? will see a contestant potentially win at least quarter of a million pounds in a tense episode of the hit gameshow.
Show host Jeremy Clarkson is back in the question seat as the show continues its 39th season. The 63-year-old presenter has helmed the iconic ITV game show since 2018 and will be shown questioning a contestant named Gerard in Sunday night’s episode. Over the course of the episode, viewers will see Gerard answer a string of questions correctly - with some help along the way - to reach the £125,000 mark.
He is then faced with a tricky question - which gives him the chance to double his jackpot to £250,000, and he is reasonably confident about the answer. Looking calm after answering the £125K question, Jeremy then says to the contestant: “This is so exciting. It really is! Let’s go, shall we? Let’s see it.”
The question reads: Which geological era, that includes the Carboniferous and Cambrian periods, has a name derived from the Greek word for ‘ancient life’? The possible answers were: mesozoic, proterozoic, cenozoic and paleozoic. Gerard had already used most of his life-lines - having already used the 50/50 option, phone a friend, and ask the audience - but could still ask show host Jeremy for some help. However, he attempts to answer the question un-aided.

Mesozoic is the middle, meso, and that’s when the dinosaurs were around, so it’s too late for Carboniferous and Cambrian. They are before triassic, jurassic, cretaceous. Cenozoic, I think, is our current era. Proterozoic and paleozoic… I mean, paleo means ‘old’, ‘ancient’? Pretty sure it means that. Portero is toying me a little bit because pro is also ‘early’.”

He took some deep breaths while Jeremy looked on and nervously nibbled on the leg of his glasses. With the clock ticking, Gerard continued to mull his options. He said: “I’ve come this far…”
Jeremy then said: “I’ll give you the situation because I’m sure you’re not thinking about it. If you get this wrong, you lose £61,000. Obviously, if you get it right, you’ve got a quarter of a million.” Weighing the odds, Gerard then explains: “I think I’m going to go for it, Jeremoy. I am going to say paleozoic. Final answer.”
Gerard reached the £250,000 question with one life-line remaining (ITV)But viewers are set to be left on the edge of their seats as the true answer is not quickly revealed. Being a huge tease, Jeremy addresses the camera and states: “Oh no. Sorry, I’ve just seen, it’s time to take a break! We’ll be back in a few moments. We’ll see you then!”
While the live studio audience would have to wait to find out the answer, thanks to the gift of Google, it is clear that Gerard did answer correctly, meaning he will win at least £250,000 - unless he gets a later question wrong. Millionaire fans will have to wait until Sunday to see how well he does.
