Manchester United chiefs are set to block Mason Greenwood from going on their pre-season tour in the United States.

The Red Devils opted to loan out the forward to Getafe, where he will spend the season, and their latest move is thought to be the clearest indication yet that Greenwood doesn't have a future at Old Trafford with a sale on the cards, reports the Daily Star.

United chose to conduct an investigation into his conduct, which came after police charges of domestic abuse against him were dropped and thrown out of court. Greenwood is due to return to Manchester in the summer and, usually, would be part of their trip across the Atlantic.

Senior figures at the club though are concerned that having the forward in their ranks could have a negative affect on the squad, their sponsors and commercial partners. United will head to America in July and play games in Los Angeles, North Carolina and San Diego.

They will include high-profile fixtures against Premier League rivals Liverpool and Arsenal, which will garner huge attention and fan presence. United faced huge backlash when it emerged they were considering bringing him back into the fold.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is now making the major football decisions and wasn't present for the initial investigation. The billionaire admits they will revisit the situation where they'll look to make a determination on Greenwood's character and see if he could feasibly play for the club again.

He has said: "The process will be: understand the facts not the hype, and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values, which is basically is he a good guy or not? Could he play sincerely for Manchester United well, would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?"

United would face huge criticism, not least from women's charities, were they to bring Greenwood back into the squad. Following their investigation, the club stated there would be 'difficulties' in him continuing his career at Old Trafford.

They said: "Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged.

"That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for. All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United."
