Weghorst's ex-teammate opens up on private text amid Ten Hag's Man Utd dilemma

Wout Weghorst’s former Burnley teammate Ashley Westwood has opened up on his private chats with the striker ahead of the "outstanding" forward's potential Manchester United debut.

The Dutchman completed a six-month loan move to Old Trafford last week after arriving from Turf Moor via Besiktas. He was on a season-long loan with the Turkish giants but United agreed to pay compensation to sign him and thus bolster Erik ten Hag’s attacking options.

Weghorst could be in line to make his Man Utd debut on Wednesday evening during the Red Devils’ Premier League showdown with Crystal Palace. The Red Devils have been hit with another injury problem with Anthony Martial looking likely to be restricted to the sidelines.

Ahead of his United bow, Weghorst certainly has a point to prove following his previous spell in England. The Dutch striker signed for Burnley in the previous January transfer window but scored just two goals as the Clarets dropped into the Championship.

It has also been suggested by The Athletic that his late-night messages to teammates rubbed his teammates up the wrong way. But Westwood, who is now plying his trade for MLS outfit Charlotte FC, has claimed that Weghorst’s physicality could hugely benefit the Red Devils with the pair having shared good luck messages ahead of respective transfers.

“He’s shown that in the World Cup. He actually texted me before I came out here [to Charlotte FC] so that was nice of him.

“It’s [Man Utd] a great move for him and I’m sure the two goals in the World Cup [vs Argentina] would have helped him and I wish him all the success in the world because it’s a fantastic opportunity for him.”

Weghorst was actually enjoying an extremely productive campaign with Besiktas ahead of his surprise move to Old Trafford. The 30-year-old had netted nine goals in 18 appearances in all competitions for the club ahead of his exit.

Whilst Weghorst had been in conversation with his former Burnley teammate Westwood, the Dutchman also revealed that he also spoke to Red Devils’ defender Alex Telles to see if he could acquire his number 27 shirt.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “Of course, when I came here, I heard about it was Alex [Telles]’s number, he got loaned out now. I first had to ask him if that was okay, so I said that was, for me, important and then, in the end, there was no problem so thanks to him also.

“So yeah, I go for the 27 and actually it’s just because I had a good feeling with it.”
