Sheff Utd's humiliation complete as bookies pay out on relegation 11 weeks early

Following Sheffield United's humiliating 6-0 defeat to Arsenal on Monday, Paddy Power have paid out on bets for the Blades to be relegated back to the Championship.

Chris Wilder's side are currently bottom of the league with only 13 points, having won just three games so far this season. Their defeat to Arsenal was the sixth time they have conceded five or more goals in the league, with Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Ben White all on target for the Gunners.

And Paddy Power have now announced they will be paying out on bets for Sheffield United to be relegated, despite still having 11 games left to play. In a post on social media, the bookmaker wrote: "We all know Sheffield United are on their way back to the Championship.

"After tonight's mauling, we thought we'd save everyone the bother of waiting... So, we've paid out early on them TO BE RELEGATED!"

Sheffield United also suffered the ignominy of becoming the first side in English league football to concede five or more goals in four consecutive home games. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the defeat, Wilder admitted his side simply "didn't have an answer" to the Gunners.

"Arsenal were outstanding," he said. "We didn't track runners and made it pretty easy for them to open us up. They cut us wide open. They are doing that to a lot of teams.

"I'm not saying that makes us feel better because that is another long night for this club.[Bukayo] Saka took us to pieces down that side. You have to try to stem the tide, especially when they are in full flow.

"When they get five at the top of the pitch, they find that pass and movement - then it is difficult to stop. We didn't have an answer to anything they had. The result is what the result is and we have to live with it."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, was utterly delighted with his team's performance. "A great night – it's a really difficult place to come but the way we started the game obviously made the difference," he said.

"We were really aggressive, really positive and we showed real quality, especially in the final third to take the game into a position where it was in a big favour for us and then we maintained it. We maintained the rhythm, the hunger and I love that about the team."
