Tim Howard believes in no uncertain terms that David Moyes was a better manager than Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former Manchester United and Everton goalkeeper had two very different spells at each club, spending four seasons at Old Trafford and 10 at Goodison Park. Despite FA Cup and League Cup wins at United, Howard struggled to regularly hold down the No.1 spot during his second season in Manchester, regularly trading places with Roy Carroll.

Edwin van der Sar's arrival in 2005 then saw any hopes of first team action diminish and he sealed a loan move to Everton. This soon became permanent. Howard thrived on Merseyside, making a whopping 414 appearances over the course of a decade - even enjoying various seasons playing in Europe.

And it is because of his fruitful spell with the Toffees that Howard believes Moyes to be a better manager than the great Ferguson. The former United States international exclusively told Mirror Football : "(Best manager?) David Moyes. I spent nearly a decade with him.

"He bought me to the football club and loved me and my teammates, cared about us and created a family bond. We won a lot of games, had a few good cup runs, in Europe a bit. Yeah, David Moyes, brilliant."

Moyes would of course leave Everton for United in 2013, succeeding the very man Howard used to work for. But his spell at United was less successful than his predecessor.

Moyes would fail to finish the 2013/14 season as United manager, winning nothing. That is compared to Ferguson's 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cup wins and two Champions League triumphs.

Though, Moyes' failure at United set the theme of what was to come over the next 10 years. Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick all failed to create consistent success at the club, despite some enjoying promising periods.

And even though Howard believes Moyes to be a better manager than Ferguson, he cannot deny his and David Gill's departures were simply too big for the club to take.

"Sir Alex Ferguson, David Gill, they were very much a dynamic duo," Howard said. "At one point Peter Kenyon was there but then he went to Chelsea and helped build them.

"That’s changed. And when that changes you’re swimming out in the ocean. And that’s why I think that anchor is the team above the team. When you are Sir Alex Ferguson and you can hand pick the all right people, and people come in because of you, play because of you, and they’re fearful of letting you down - that permeates the entire club. And we don’t have that figurehead at the football club."
