Princess Kate is renowned for having a competitive streak when it comes to sports, but there was one hobby she couldn't quite knack after giving birth to her first son George.

The Princess of Wales, who has been recovering at home since having abdominal surgery in January, is known to juggle her royal duties with bringing up her three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Kate is said to be determined to give the royal kids the most normal upbringing they can - and is said to be a very hands-on parent alongside husband Prince William. So much so that she once revealed how she attempted to pick up a special skill around the time of her first pregnancy and when oldest son George was born so she could make him a thoughtful present.

But she admitted it turned into a disaster as she was "really bad" at it - despite having an artistic side. Other mums found the admission very relatable.

The hobby in question was knitting. The Princess of Wales first revealed she was trying her hand at knitting way back in 2013 when she was pregnant with George. According to Hello!, she told a group of royal fans while visiting Glasgow: "I've been trying to knit and I'm really bad. I should be asking for tips!"

In 2020, during a trip to Bradford, Kate visited Older Yet Wiser - an organisation that supports grandparents - and met with some grandmothers who were showing off their crocheting skills. And there she confessed that her attempts to knit George a jumper had completely failed. She told the group: "I tried knitting when I first had George. I tried to knit him a very special jumper, but I got halfway down and it splattered. It's such an amazing skill."

Kate usually does the school run, attends her children's school events and gets stuck in with royal duties but Kensington Palace confirmed she is not expected to return to public duties until after Easter. According to HELLO!'s royal editor Emily Nash, Kate's stay in hospital wouldn't have stopped her from keeping up to date with the children either.

She explained at the time: "Kate loves FaceTiming the children when she is working away overseas so I'm sure they will be in regular contact while she's in hospital, and the kids will be keen to see her as soon as she's well enough.

"She loves having her family around her so will be looking forward to getting home and having cuddles with the kids. Both William and Kate are very hands-on parents – they take the kids to school, attend sports matches and concerts and try to be home for bedtime as much as they can. While Kate is in hospital, William will be at home keeping things as normal as possible."

Prince William has been tending to Kate while she's at home and making sure he's there for their brood too. He recently pulled out of a memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece, where he was due to give a reading, at the last minute recently due to a "personal matter" which left fans speculating about Kate's condition.

Kensington Palace was forced to give an update following the amount of speculation. A Royal spokesperson said: "Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the princess' recovery and we'd only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands. The Princess of Wales continues to be doing well."

An earlier statement read: "The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.

"Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness' progress when there is significant new information to share. The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."
