Paul Scholes says Manchester United 's lack of impetus to come from behind and beat Manchester City looked nothing short of 'horrific'.

After taking the lead through a thumping Marcus Rashford strike, which turned out to be United's only shot on target in the entire game, Phil Foden levelled the score with a fine effort of his own. Foden then put the hosts 2-1 up at the Etihad before Erling Haaland made up for an earlier horror miss to make it 3-1.

Analysing the game after, Scholes was left somewhat perturbed by United's lack of effort to try and get back into the contest. The former United midfielder pointed out that playing poorly while winning is fine, so long as the team is holding onto a lead. But to continue playing in the same manner when behind, Scholes says, makes things look so much worse.

"When City are losing and United are playing that way it's OK," he said on Optus Sport. "It's acceptable. When they're getting beat it looks horrific.

"Because they can't do anything else, they've not got another gear. And with the players they've got at the moment they're just not capable of competing with this Manchester City team."

He went on: "United looked reasonably safe. City weren't creating too many clearcut chances. Like I said before, when you're playing that way, when you've got a lead it looks OK, everything's brilliant, it's a masterclass of a tactitian performance from the manager. But it isn't really.

"You've just got 11 men around ball and hope for the counter attack. But once you go behind, United down have the answers. They don't have the quality of Manchester City. They can't keep a spell of possession for more than three or four minutes and at the end they looked unrecognisable."

Scholes listed five things United could have done to improve their chances once 2-1 down, including using Rashford's pace on the flanks and putting pressure on their opponents.

"As soon as they go ahead it looks awful," he exclaimed. "You look at United and think 'right, we're behind' you've go out and play and try put pressure on City, try to keep the ball for a spell, try to get Marcus Rashford in down the side, try and bring your best players in the game."

The defeat to City is yet another dent to United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. United sit in sixth, six points behind Tottenham who have a game in hand. Wins for both Spurs and Aston Villa at the weekend will have further hampered their chances.
