Ryan Reynolds compared the Wrexham players to Harry Potter students after Saturday’s empathic win.

The Welsh club claimed a 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley at the Racecourse Ground to keep pace with the automatic promotion places in League Two. The team’s co-owner took to Instagram to share a slideshow with photos from the game, with Pat Benatar’s 2001 song titled ‘We Belong’ playing in the background, as he referenced the famous movie franchise.

“What a day, what a win for @wrexham_afc! And a hat-trick for @paulmullin12,” the Deadpool star posted. “Huge thanks to @united for handing out what seemed like 22 billion scarves and making the whole day look like a tensely contested quidditch match. #UpTheTown.” Following a penalty in the last game that ended his seven-game goal drought, striker Paul Mullin seems to have rediscovered his scoring form.

His hat-trick and another from top goalscorer Elliot Lee ensured Wrexham won just the second match of their last eight league games. In reference to Mullin’s outstanding performance, Reynolds tweeted Saturday: “What a menace,” while McElhenney added: “I guess Paul is back to fitness.”

This is something Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson alluded to during his comments after the match as he expressed his delight with his team going back to winning ways. "(I'm) pleased, a really good performance from the lads and yes, it's a great win,” he said. "I've been saying we've dominated a lot of games without really getting our rewards, but we've kept believing that dominance will be turned into goals because in the last few years, it normally has.

“It's probably the first time where we've had periods where we haven't punished teams. Today, we were excellent in around that final third, which is obviously the most important part of the football pitch. Mulls [Mullin] was brilliant today. He was back to his sharpest." The win moved Wrexham up to third place in League Two after Crewe Alexander succumbed to a 3-2 defeat against playoff rivals Morecambe.

The winners of the 2023-24 National League are level on points with second-place Stockport, only behind on goal difference, but are three behind the league leaders Mansfield Town. However, Wrexham still has some work to do as the top two sides in the league have a game in hand.

McElhenney was at the Racecourse to witness the victory and he interrupted Mullin’s post-match interview to comment on the club’s second-biggest league win of the campaign. “It was an incredibly fortunate week to pick, but I have nothing to do with what goes on out there - these players are special. What a beautiful sport, when you put in the work like Paul does, good things happen," the actor said.

“It’s an exciting final two months of the season. I’m going to be back very soon because many of those games will be very important games.” Wrexham will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 when they travel to the Globe Arena to face Morecambe.
