Trigger Point's future has been teased with a series three possibly on the way, after the dramatic end to the second series of the ITV drama.

Vicky McClure and co left viewers on the edge of their seats in the final episode, and it led to fans making a huge plea to bosses. With the ending revealed, fans wanted to know if it meant a third series was happening after no confirmation by ITV.

There is still nothing to suggest a third season is confirmed and in the works, but producer Jed Mercurio has addressed the possibility. There certainly would be room for more of the show, given how it ended on Sunday night.

Vicky's character Lana Washington faced a deadly ultimatum, that saw her life on the line as well as that of her parents, and plenty of others. Lana was tested after being kidnapped by the terror group who had not only claimed the life of her lover DCI Thom Youngblood, but also killed several others in a series of bomb attacks.

Lana had been on track to catch the group and stop their actions, only to be kidnapped with her forced to help them carry out one final attack. With the Home Secretary and others heading to Counter-Terrorism HQ for an emergency meeting, Hope and the others in the terrorist group decided this was the perfect location for their next act, and Lana was tasked with transporting an explosive device into the building. Lana was warned that explosives had been placed in the home of her mum and dad, and if she went against their plan her parents would die.

Ultimately, Lana was able to trick the group and stop them with her interfering with their original device. This meant that when Hope dialled the phone in Lana's possession expecting it to trigger her explosive in the building, it instead redirected to the bomb still in the van.

The van exploded killing them, and Lana was able to explain everything and was also able to save her parents with the help of her colleagues. In the fallout the rest of the group were arrested, and Lana did not face trouble - while she admitted at team member Danny's wedding that she was "not okay" as the events of series one and two caught up with her.

As the series came to an end, viewers raced to X to beg for more episodes. One fan posted: "Series 3 please!" Another viewer wrote: "I do pray there’s a season 3 please," as a third asked: "Who else is hoping for series three?" The pleas kept on coming with another reading: "Hoping there's a third series."

While ITV are yet to comment, Jed said: "I don't think you can predict whether shows will be long-running, all you can do is do the best possible job with each season and hope it connects with the audience. If we're fortunate enough that season two is viewed with the same enthusiasm as season one then it would be brilliant if we could do season three, but we're not thinking about that yet. We'd love season two to be a hit and to have opportunities to do other seasons, but no one's counting their chickens."

Speaking about working on the series, Vicky revealed: "It was so exhausting! It is physical for sure, but the most tiring aspect is that I’m in pretty much every day because even if I’m not acting I’m there as an executive producer, watching footage and writing notes on scripts. I don’t want to be an exec just for the title, I’ve got my own production company now and I like to get involved.

"I’ve always been interested in production, ever since I started doing acting many years ago, because I’m pretty nosey and I like to know what’s happening. I feel like a crew member on Trigger Point, which is great. I’m just one of those people who tends not to take too much time off. I think I did have one massage during the shoot because my back felt like it was broken in half at one point, but otherwise I just kept going. I turned 40 while we were filming, so that was a great excuse for me to keep moaning about the fact that I’m 40 and was doing all this running – the camera could tell it was me so there was no chance of using a stunt double! I lucked out though because my birthday was the day of the coronation so everyone was off."

Trigger Point series one and two are both available to stream now on ITV X.* Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on , , , , , and .
