Customers were "gutted" at the news that a popular fish and chip shop in Huddersfield has closed down - but they won't be sad for long.

Previously crowned "Britain's cheapest chippie," Olde England Fisheries in Huddersfield town centre was popular for its £5 fish and chip meals. However, loyal customers were feeling lost after they turned up to the shop and found it closed. One woman said she was "gutted."

A regular at Olde England Fisheries, Natasha said: "You wrote an article in September on the above fish and chip restaurant. Do you know why they have now closed down? Thanks very much. Yours very gutted."

It appears the closure is only temporary. Owner Taher Hussain could not be reached for comment, but a sign on the shop shutter said: "Sorry we are closed 13th February to 20th March." The chippie received a four-star review back in September.

It was visited by YorkshireLive's Andrew Robinson who found the restaurant packed on a Friday afternoon. He wrote: "The fish batter was perfectly crunchy and the haddock itself was tender, moist, flaky and flavoursome.

"The overall portion was more than adequate for an early lunch, although bigger appetites might fancy medium fish and chips (£7) or even king size (£9). The chips were a little limp for my taste but I was assured they had been double-cooked which would normally leave them with a crispy outer shell. Cooking oil is used for frying."

Taher Hussain said he aimed to keep prices as low as possible in order to help his customers. Last year he said: "We are a family-run business and I am not bothered about the profit (as) everybody gets a wage out of it. We are quite happy with that at the moment.
