Margot Chevrier suffered a broken ankle while competing in the pole vault finals at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, with the French athlete needing to be stretchered out of the arena.

After clearing 4.55 metres, Chevrier suffered the injury in her first attempt at clearing the next height of 4.65m. According to the French Athletics Federation, Chevrier 'fell into the barrier' and immediately required treatment.

The final was postponed for around 15 minutes while she received medical treatment, with BBC presenter Gabby Logan revealing the nature of Chevrier's injury. "We're hearing we think she's broken her ankle in competition," Logan said.

"The competition has just paused for a moment while she is seen to. She is down by the mat and receiving treatment." According to high jump coach Grant Brown, Chevrier's "bone was sticking out". It is understood the athlete was transported to hospital following the incident.

Chevrier's injury comes after Canada's Alysha Newman withdrew from the final shortly before it began with an ankle issue she picked up in training. "If this was the Olympics it's something you would push through," Newman told CBC Sports.

"I did everything [possible to compete]. [I] was up [Saturday until 3, 4 a.m. local time] doing treatments. We got all the inflammation out. Weirdy, now that the inflammation's out, I have more pain.

"I sprinted [in the warmup and] felt great … [but] I was getting sharp pain down the runway. "I've come a long way from injury and you have to go with your gut.

"I'm so proud of my indoor season. … This is a minor setback compared to my other injuries and that's what I need to remember. This is not new territory for me."

Great Britain's Molly Caudery went on to win gold in the final, finishing ahead of New Zealand's Eliza McCartney and America's Katie Moon. "It's fairy tale stuff," Olympic gold medallist Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill told the BBC.

"She's come into this season and performed brilliantly in a field that is stacked and will be very similar to the Olympics. What a fantastic gold medal for Molly Caudery."
