The BRIT Awards 2024 viewers were not impressed by a shake-up to the coverage, with the "awkward" introduction of a kiss cam.

It didn't seem to go down well in the room either, as hosts Clara Amfo, Maya Jama and Roman Kemp hosted proceedings at London's 02 Arena on Saturday night. As the trio joked around and brought up a kiss cam, Maya revealed there was "love in the air" after hosting Love Island All Stars last month.

She suggested there was love in the room too, before picking two celebrity couples and another two pairings to feature on the kiss cam. Two such pairings were Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones of McFly, as well as Kylie Minogue and host Roman.

But as none of the kisses went to plan, the hosts watched on awkwardly as silence filled the room. There was minimal laughter over the moment, while others were no doubt fearing the camera would soon pan on them.

But it wasn't just those in the audience in the arena who were disappointed, as viewers watching at home were also not onboard with the new segment on the show. Taking to X, fans called it out and claimed it was "cringe" and "awkward".

Complaining minutes into the ceremony, one fan posted: "Kiss cam how cringe." Another agreed: "This kiss cam nonsense is so cringe im crying," as a third said: "Kiss cam? Why? This is cringey."

Another fan posted: "Already feels awks Kiss Cam not needed." The comments kept on coming with another reading: "that kiss cam was so awkward I’m sorry," as another said: "Kiss cam?? Really. As if the #BRITs wasn’t painful enough…more awkward silences they can do without! Surely."

Ahead of the show, the hosting trio all shared their excitement to be teaming up to present the awards. Clara said: “Hosting The BRITs is a bucket list job, I’m so very honoured and excited for this year’s show. Throughout my career, I’ve been so lucky to witness the growth of this year’s nominees and performers and I know it’s gonna be another special one. I can’t wait to hit the stage with Maya and Roman to celebrate these amazing artists at The O2!”

Maya added: “I'm really excited to be hosting The BRIT Awards alongside Clara and Roman. I’ve worked alongside the incredible team at the BRITs for years now and it’s something I always watched, and wanted to be a part of, growing up - so it’s amazing to be on the stage this year hosting it! It’s always one of the best nights of the year for me, and a real celebration of British music, culture, and talent.”

Roman shared: “This is a real pinch me moment! Hosting the BRIT Awards - what an honour. I remember watching the BRITs on TV when I was growing up so to be asked to host this year’s awards, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a privilege to share the stage with so many talented artists and to celebrate the incredible achievements of all the nominees and winners this year. See you there.”

The BRIT Awards was hit with controversy last year when no female artists made the final shortlist for Artist of the Year – which was subsequently won by Harry Styles. The British Phonograph Industry, who organise the annual event, have stated that gender balance has been readdressed following last year's outrage.

Speaking last month, BPI Chair Yolanda Brown, said: "We shared our upset that no women or R&B artists were represented last year. We consulted with our advisory group, we thought long and hard about moving forward."

The BRIT Awards 2024 airs live from 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, and will be available to watch in full on ITVX after.* Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on , , , , , and .
