BRIT nominee Becky Hill has been open on struggling with her sexuality and why she’s had to give up drinking.

After rising to fame on the first series of The Voice, Becky Hill has seen huge success with her dance style anthems and has numerous awards to her name already. She’s nominated for a third consecutive year for Dance Act at this year’s BRIT Awards, having won the accolade at the past two ceremonies.

The singer-songwriter will also take to the stage again at the event - this year with electronic music duo Chase & Status, who are shortlisted for Group of the Year. On her excitement at the pairing Becky said: "I can’t wait to perform again on the BRITs and it’s been difficult trying to top flying from the ceiling of the O2 last year, but I’m excited about what we have planned for this year’s performance. I’ve been a fan of Chase & Status my whole life, so to have them on stage performing with me is going to be really special. It’s a real celebration of drum & bass - my favourite genre of music!"

Away from the stage, Becky has been open about her personal life and the struggles she’s faced. She’s engaged to fiance Charlie Gardner and the couple have been together for almost eight years. It was on a romantic getaway to the Maldives at the start of 2022 that Charlie, who works in the entertainment industry but prefers to stay out of the spotlight, got down on one knee.

Becky shared their happy news as well as her shock over the proposal on Instagram along with a series of photos captioned: "Turns out he actually does like me" with a diamond ring emoji. One snap showed the happy couple on a beach and in others she flashed her beautiful sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

Just over a year later, in May 2023 she revealed the couple had decided to put their nuptials on hold so she could concentrate on the release of her next album. "I really need to make sure this next album works, to work out what kind of wedding I can have, and what kind of life I can have after it!" she said at the time.

"This is my literal future, I'm 30 next year, if it doesn't go well this year it's... in the music industry it's never given to you, like any minute, the rug can be ripped from under your feet. It's like the least secure job, I think we definitely all saw that through lockdown and stuff."

However in January 2024 as they celebrated two years of being engaged, she announced they would tie the knot this year. In an Instagram post she said: "Today I’ve been engaged to the love of my life for two years, together 8 in March & finally ready to tie the knot this year. We celebrated with our DJ set at @hide.club & this morning I was woken up with flowers & gifts."

It hasn’t all been hearts and flowers though and like many couples, Becky and Charlie went through a rough patch. On an episode of Keith Lemon’s Shopping in 2022, Becky revealed that after a brief split from Charlie, she went to an all-girls sex party because she was confused about her sexuality. She told Keith: "When we went through a breakup, I ended up going to an all-girls sex party because I wanted to find out... I came out still not knowing. I was like, 'Did I like that? Did I enjoy that?'."

She said after the experience she realised that she could only ever fall in love with a man and doesn’t see that happening with a woman.

The singer has previously spoken about identifying as queer and clarified on the show what she believes the term means: "It doesn't mean gay, it doesn't mean bi. It kind of means you're undefined. My first female experience was when I was 17. I remember my mum saying to me when I was 14, 'Becky, every woman fancies other women.' Ever since I said I think I'm queer I've found my sexual empowerment in terms of being on stage."

She also spoke to Attitude magazine about her sexuality and owning it: "I know I enjoy sleeping with women, to what degree of that I don't know, but I'd rather call myself queer and name it for what it is, than have men fantasise over the idea that I might be bi-curious or like a cheeky threesome here and there."

In 2023 Becky relocated to her apartment in Ibiza to work on new music for her second album, due out this year. She wanted to enjoy a proper life out there rather than living out of a suitcase and rushing from the airport to venues for performances. Despite it having a reputation as a party island, Becky had no plans to over-indulge because she had already made the difficult decision to quit booze.

"My hangovers now last more than 24 hours which I am absolutely f*****g gutted about. Alcohol stopped being my friend," she said. "If I drink a little bit now, the implications of having a two-day hangover where I can’t get out of bed and do my job aren’t worth it."

In January 2023 she revealed she'd tried having a cocktail and a few shots but it backfired and she felt dreadful the next day. Sharing a selfie on , Becky wrote: "I’ve been sober for a couple of months now but last night I thought I’d try having a cocktail and a couple of shots...

"Well if I ever needed a reminder that alcohol isn’t my friend any more I got one today. I’m so anxious - not even hungover. I didn’t drink that much, I’m just horribly anxious. I don’t know when me and booze fell out but it hates me now with a vengeance."

She added: "Some people can drink, I could once and it was a sad conclusion to come to because I felt like I was grieving Party Becky. Sobriety is f*****g hard, but not as hard as having to convince myself I’m not an awful piece of s**t."
