Erik ten Hag has told Marcus Rashford that he can be "unstoppable" with the right attitude ahead of Sunday's highly anticipated Manchester derby.

Ten Hag takes his Manchester United team to the Etihad in need of a result after overseeing the club's worst start to a season in decades. That has led to scrutiny over his long-term future with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club's new part-owner, set to assess every aspect of the club's operations between now and the end of the season.

The former Ajax chief enjoyed a fine maiden year at the helm and Rashford's form played a significant part in that. The England forward plundered a career-best tally of 30 goals but has struggled to emulate that form this term.

Rashford is poised to lead the line for United against Manchester City in place of the injured Rasmus Hojlund - and Ten Hag has insisted that the forward can put his struggles to bed by inspiring his teammates to a memorable derby day triumph if his attitude is right.

Ten Hag told Sky Sports of Rashford: "What he can take from the past is that he can score a lot of goals. He can score against the biggest opponents in the world and against the best defenders in the world. It's just about him; if he has his attitude right on Sunday, he is unstoppable.

"It's about him. Of course, we have to serve him, that's a part of it, but in all the games against City he had big chances to score goals. He's also scored plenty of goals against Man City, especially at the Etihad."

Rashford has scored just five goals in all competitions this season and struggled in a central role as United beat Nottingham Forest in midweek to book an FA Cup quarter-final date with arch-rivals Liverpool.

Reports earlier this week claimed that the England international's relationship with Ten Hag has completely broken down this season. Rashford has been hit with disciplinary action twice by Ten Hag, firstly after celebrating his birthday hours after October's 3-0 defeat against City in the derby and then again after a heavy drinking session in Belfast last month.

After being fined two weeks' wages, Rashford was promptly reinstated to the team after missing out on an FA Cup tie against Newport County. Ten Hag insisted the incident had been put behind them, though.

"He has taken responsibility and the rest is an internal matter," he explained. "Case closed."
