Woman 'raped near UK coastal landmark' as three teenage boys, all 15, arrested

Three teens have been arrested on suspicion of raping a woman near to a coastal tourist landmark in broad daylight.

A woman, understood to be in her 30s, reported that she had been raped near to Tynemouth Priory in Tynemouth, near Newcastle, on Sunday afternoon. Police immediately launched an investigation, arresting three boys all aged 15 on suspicion of rape.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 3.50pm on Sunday we received a report of rape in the Tynemouth Priory and Castle area of Tynemouth. An investigation was immediately launched by police, and the female victim continues to be supported by specialist officers.

“Officers have arrested three males, all aged 15, on suspicion of rape. They have since been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Enquiries are ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact police."

Tynemouth is a large village which attracts thousands of visitors each year for its beach, shopping and coastal walks. Tynemouth castle and priory are sites of historic interest overlooking the North Sea which were once one of the largest fortified areas in England. They're now run by English Heritage and are a popular tourist attraction.
