David Beckham has been lined up to appear in a new documentary on Sven-Goran Eriksson.

‌Former England captain Beckham and ex-Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney are two of the star names set to appear in a fly-on-the-wall show which is expected to be shown on Amazon Prime.

It is a bold move from the former England manager because the film was in the offing even before it became public knowledge that the 76-year-old had terminal cancer. But rather than abandon the doc, Eriksson was keen to go ahead and it is a reflection of the Swede’s popularity that some of football’s biggest names have been keen to take part.

‌Jurgen Klopp is also likely to feature after the club’s generous gesture to allow Eriksson to fulfil a lifelong wish of coaching a Liverpool team at Anfield. Liverpool boss Klopp gave a moving tribute to Eriksson recently and could not have been more helpful as the club have set up a charity match featuring LFC Legends at Anfield on March 23.

Whisper Films, the production company co-founded by Jake Humphrey, will detail Eriksson’s condition over the next few months. But the tributes and warmth from football legends like Beckham and Rooney are certain to be well received.

‌Eriksson revealed in January that he had terminal cancer but made it clear that he wanted to live the last period of his remarkable life to the fullest and the film is certain to reflect that.

‌Mainoo set for U21s call-up

Lee Carsley was at Old Trafford last Saturday to check on Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo. That is perhaps a clear sign that the 18-year-old midfielder will be in England under-21 boss Carsley’s next squad rather than the seniors.

Mainoo, 18, is seen as being a potential England star of the future and the FA are likely to want to tie him down as he is also eligible for Ghana. But Mainoo’s next step is likely to be with Carsley’s under-21s as they play Azerbaijan and Luxembourg in March.

‌Meanwhile, Carsley himself is almost certain to be on the FA’s shortlist if Gareth Southgate leaves after the Euros. There are bound to be bigger name candidates - namely Graham Potter and Eddie Howe - but the FA always champion coach progression.

England’s fans have been superb in recent tournaments but the Euro clash with Serbia on June 16 is likely to cause more of a concern than the other Group games with Denmark and Slovenia. There is some history as Danny Rose called for Serbia to be banned after being racially abused by fans in the stadium when England played there in 2012.‌

Arteta's buzzword

Mikel Arteta’s buzzword around the Arsenal training ground and games is “control.” Gunners boss Arteta set out this season to ensure that his team are in charge of games which may explain why there is perhaps less off-the-cuff attacking flair than last season but the stats are far more impressive.

‌Stats site Mark Stats Bot has compiled a fascinating table which Arsenal sit proudly at the top not just in Premier League terms but across all five major European leagues. It shows they play with the highest defensive line but also face teams who maintain the lowest defensive line which has become commonly known as a low block.

‌Arteta prides himself on pinning teams back, not allowing them to escape and that is why they keep a high line but also face teams who have to sit deep. Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is ranked ninth in the Premier League but 39th across Europe despite the Aussie having a reputation for using a high defensive line.
