Our washing machines clean all of our clothes for us - but sometimes the trusty specialist needs some TLC of its own.

It may seem like an impossible task to wash the machine itself, but it is vital if you want your clothes to remain clean. Often mould and bacteria can build up in the seal around washing machine and detergent drawer, which can be bad for your health and you may notice an unusual smell.

A new study by appliance brand AEG has found that two-thirds of Brits do not clean their washing machine as often as recommended, and one in five Brits admit they never clean their appliance at all. The good news is that cleaning your machine is a lot easier than you may think.

A washing machine specialist insists says you won't need any fancy products nor to spend any money; all you need to do is leave the detergent drawer slightly open every few weeks.

Michael Forbes, Product Specialist at AEG, said those who regularly use their washing machines should remove the detergent drawer once a month and give it a proper clean with warm soapy water. Forbes said: "Don't forget to clean the area inside the machine where the drawer slides into. Top tip: due to the wet environment and detergents used, you may notice mould growth in the detergent drawer. Opening the drawer slightly after every use can help prevent this."

The expert explained that without regular cleaning the of drawer, build-up from hard water deposits and leftover detergent can cause the appliance to work harder and less efficiently. This build-up can also contribute to mould growth which can spread to clothing items causing strong odours and discolouration.

Michael added that people should also be running a maintenance wash and clean the drum and door should be cleaned every month. Every few months the rubber seal and filter should be cleaned, but The filter can be cleaned once a year.

Michael added: "Don't forget to clean the area inside the machine where the drawer slides into." Due to the wet environment and detergents used, you may notice mould growth in the detergent drawer. Opening the drawer slightly after every use can help prevent this.

Michael also suggested: "For areas that have hard water, more attention should be paid to frequently cleaning a machine to avoid any limescale build-up. This build-up of minerals can cause the appliance to work harder and less efficiently."

"The drum and door seals should also be cleaned every two months, wiping it down with a damp cloth, taking care to get into the seal, especially at the bottom of the door. The machine filter should also be removed and thoroughly rinsed to remove any collected debris. Make sure to place any towels down to catch any excess water."
