Tristan Thompson has become the legal guardian of his younger brother following their mother's death.

Andrea passed away a year ago leaving Amari in Tristan's care, with the NBA player looking after his younger sibling since. The Los Angeles County Superior Court granted him sole guardianship of his 17-year-old sibling in court documents obtained on Monday.

Tristan, 32, filed for temporary guardianship in September after claiming that their father, Trevor, has been absent and not involved in raising Amari - who suffers from epilepsy amongst other medical issues - since 2014. The documents also mention Amari having been born in Canada stating: "The Court finds that it is not in the Minor best interest to be returned to his/her parents’ previous country of nationality."

According to Page Six the judge also ruled out any reunion between Trevor and Amari stating that it was "not viable due to neglect, abandonment under California law." Tristan will now have control of any living arrangements, finances, and travel both domestically and internationally for his brother. He will also be in control of Amari’s $103,475 inheritance he received from his late mother.

Tristan and Amari live in his home in California's Hidden Hills, but also lived with the Cleveland Cavaliers player's ex Khloé Kardashian when the residence was damaged by a storm. Khloe spoke about the arrangement during an episode of The Kardashian's saying: "I’m grateful that I’m strong enough and brave enough to be a support system for someone else that has no other support system right now. You don’t have to treat me right for me to treat you right, it’s not the way I was raised."

Khloé even hosted a birthday party for Amari at her home last summer as he celebrated turning 17 shortly after the loss of his mother. She dedicated an Instagram post to the teenager writing: "Someone is 17 today!!!! Happy birthday sweet sweet Amari!!! We are all so blessed to have been touched by an angel such as you, you are truly one of Gods greatest treasures."

Tristan was recently suspended from the NBA for 25 games after violating the league's strict anti-drug policy. It was revealed that Tristan he had tested positive for the banned substances ibutamoren and SARM LGD-4033, which are used as performance enhancers. The scandal led to the suspension without pay.
