Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to appoint Real Madrid icon Zinedine Zidane should he decide to sack Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman’s future looks far from certain at Old Trafford. The former Ajax boss has struggled to build upon a promising first season with the Red Devils.

Man United have lost ten of their Premier League games so far, and their hopes of being in the Champions League next term are fading fast. Ratcliffe has yet to publicly give his backing to Ten Hag.

And it now appears that he has decided on his replacement. According to French outlet FootMercato, the Red Devils are interested in bringing Zidane to Old Trafford.

The former midfielder has not worked since his second spell with Real Madrid but does have a sparkling CV. The 51-year-old won three Champions League, two La Liga titles and a whole host of other trophies.

Zidane has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past but claimed that he wanted a better grasp of the English language before he considered a switch. Speaking in 2022, he said: "Would I want to go to Manchester [United]? I understand English, but I’m not completely fluent in it.

"I know that there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work in a different way. Many elements come into play in order to win, it is a global context. I know what I need to win."

Asked if he was interested in a move to England, he added: "Never say never, especially when you are a coach today. When I was a player, I had the choice, almost all the clubs. Coach, there aren’t fifty clubs I can go to. If I go to a club, it is to win. I say this with all modesty. That’s why I can’t go anywhere."

Ten Hag has also recently spoken out on his future. He claimed he has full confidence from Ratcliffe despite the INEOS owner’s refusal to publicly back him.

Speaking ahead of his side’s FA Cup clash with Nottingham Forest, the Dutchman said: “"I'm under contract for three seasons, so I don't care. I am in this process, I'm only focusing on the process, so I don't care what's going on around me.

“I have many talks with Sir Jim Radcliffe, also with Sir Dave Brailsford and others in that group, so I know where we are talking about and I have a strong belief and I feel that they believe in me."
