Eric Ramsay made a pointed reference to his new club’s “strong football culture” after trading Manchester United for Minnesota United.

Ramsay is a first-team coach under Erik ten Hag at United, where he has worked since joining Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s staff in July 2021. The 32-year-old is highly regarded, having become the youngest British coach to earn his UEFA Pro licence in 2019.

He has now been appointed as Minnesota’s new manager, replacing interim boss Cameron Knowles at the MLS side. Ramsay will leave his current position after Sunday's Premier League derby against Manchester City and his parting words might sting for United.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining a club with such a strong football culture, a fanatic fan base and a brilliant infrastructure," said Ramsay. "I've spoken to a lot of the club’s staff throughout the process and you can’t help but feel everyone’s passion for moving the club forward.

"There is a really exciting pathway for the future of the club and I’m looking forward to playing my role in realising that vision. I thank the club for putting its faith in me and I hope it’s the start of another successful period for everyone connected with Minnesota United."

Confirming the news, the Red Devils said: "We would like to thank Eric for his contribution, and wish him the best of luck in the US in his first head-coach role." Ramsay’s words are particularly interesting given comments from the club’s new owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Speaking to Belgian newspaper De Tijd last week, Ratcliffe publicly criticised the culture at the club he’s just bought 27.7 per cent of. “We have to look at the organisation of the club because it is not good at the moment,” Ratcliffe said. “Take the head coach [Erik ten Hag] for example he must report directly to the CEO. That is no longer possible in a modern football organisation.

“We then have to ensure that the right people end up in the right positions. Every person in management must be world-class. And then it is important to create a positive, supportive, friendly and high-quality environment. That culture was missing before. Only in such an environment can you get the best out of sportsmen. If successful, the results will follow automatically. That’s the plan and I believe in it.”

Ramsay has become the sixth coach from the UK to take a job in the MLS, joining Charlotte's Dean Smith, Phil Neville of Portland Timbers, Nashville's Gary Smith, John Herdman of Toronto and New York City's Nick Cushing.

Ramsay played for Welshpool Town and Loughborough University, where he began his coaching career alongside Kieran McKenna, who previously worked at United under Solskjaer and is now the manager of Ipswich. As well as with United, he has previously held coaching roles at Swansea, Shrewsbury and Chelsea.
