Jadon Sancho was branded the "worst player on the pitch" as Borussia Dortmund were beaten 3-2 by Hoffenheim on Sunday.

Sancho rejoined Dortmund on loan last month after a public falling out with Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, which saw him exiled from the first team after he took issue with the Dutchman stating his "performances in training" were why he had not been picked in the squad for the 3-1 loss to Arsenal in September.

The winger then hit back with a statement on social media, where he claimed Ten Hag's comments were "completely untrue" and that he was being made a "scapegoat". As a result, Sancho has not played for United since and returned to Dortmund in an attempt to get rediscover his best form.

However, he has struggled to make much of an impact so far, having failed to score a single goal in seven games. And German outlet Der Westen have now laid into Sancho after Dortmund's loss to Hoffenheim, where he played 75 minutes before being replaced by Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.

"BVB was so happy when Jadon Sancho was brought back during the last winter transfer period," they wrote. "The prodigal son is finally back. He really sent the fans into a state of euphoria. A few weeks later there is no sign of it anymore.

"Against TSG Hoffenheim, the supporters hoped that the 23-year-old would finally score his first goal. But they were disappointed once again. The BVB star showed another poor performance against Hoffenheim and was probably the worst player on the pitch."

It comes after Dortmund drew 1-1 with PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie last week, with head coach Edin Terzic admitting after that game that Sancho "knows" he needs to improve his performances.

"With Jadon it is always good to have him around, inside the team, inside the group and also inside the squad on a matchday, because Jadon is capable of making special things happen," Terzic told TNT Sports.

"He didn't have his best performance today, like us all, and he knows that he is able to play better football than today. This is what we are going to work on, to get him back on this level every three days when needed. But he is full of joy and we are really happy and pleased that he is around."
