One of Erik ten Hag's top coaches, Eric Ramsay, has officially left Manchester United to become the new coach of MLS side Minnesota United.

Minnesota confirmed on Monday with a post on X: "The club has announced Eric Ramsay as the second head coach in Minnesota United's Major League Soccer history. Ramsay joins the club from Manchester United, where he served as a first-team coach under current manager Erik ten Hag."

The 32-year-old was one of the highest rated coaches at United, handing the Red Devils and new billionaire investor Jim Ratcliffe a major blow. Ramsay had already received interest from Swansea and was offered a managerial role at Blackpool within the last two months, something he turned down after Ten Hag expressed his desire for him to stay.

United claimed they would be very sad to see Ramsay go but wouldn't stand in his way, and Minnesota have finally turned his head. Ramsay is now the youngest head coach in MLS history, but leaves United just days before they face rivals Manchester City in the Premier League.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining a club with such a strong football culture, a fanatic fan base and a brilliant infrastructure," said Ramsay. "I've spoken to a lot of the club’s staff throughout the process and you can’t help but feel everyone’s passion for moving the club forward.

"There is a really exciting pathway for the future of the club and I’m looking forward to playing my role in realizing that vision. I thank the club for putting its faith in me and I hope it’s the start of another successful period for everyone connected with Minnesota United."

Ramsay was identified as the top target for Minnesota after an "extensive search" by the club for their new manager. The MLS side were keen on getting the right person for the job, they started the 2024 season - which started for Minnesota on Saturday - without a head coach in place.

The team managed to win 2-1 away to Austin FC, giving Ramsay a win to build off in his first game as head coach. Ramsay may only be 32, but he has been coaching ever since he started leading his university team alongside current Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna.

After graduating with a degree in Sports Science, Ramsay spent nearly four years as a Lead Professional Development Phase Coach at Swansea City, who were in the Premier League at the time. He then became academy manager at Shrewsbury Town in 2017, later becoming interim manager of the first-team and then first-team coach.

Ramsay then continued his development as he joined Chelsea in 2019, becoming the Under-23s coach and the youngest British coach to achieve the UEFA Pro Licence. He moved to United in 2021 as a player development and set-piece coach under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After earning his stripes he became an important part of their coaching set-up under Ralf Rangnick and then Ten Hag. Ramsay is also fluent in French and Spanish, and helped various new signings such as Casemiro settle into life in Manchester.

During his time at United, Ramsay also joined national team Wales as an assistant coach and was given a glowing review by manager Rob Page. "Eric is arguably one of the best young coaches in football at this moment in time," Page said in 2023 after Ramsay arrived.

Ramsay left his Wales role after six months to focus on Manchester United and his young family, although they will now relocate to the United States to start a new chapter. Minnesota hosts Columbus Crew on March 2, but it's likely Ramsay won't be in the dugout until March 9 when they travel to Orlando City.
