Brit mum denied C-section and 'left bleeding' dies in hospital with her baby
A pregnant Brit mum tragically died in a Spanish clinic alongside her baby after bleeding for more than five hours.
Kelsey Brown moved from Liverpool to Marbella, Spain, in December 2020, where she registered as a patient at the Hospital Ceram. The 34-year-old hairdresser was expecting her second baby, and paid for the private clinic "to ensure the best treatment for her and her unborn child".
Her family believed her pregnancy was going well - but when Kelsey went into labour on July 20, 2021 and was taken to the hospital, a heart monitor could not detect the baby's heartbeat and a scan revealed that he had died. Kelsey began losing blood at 1.30pm and was described as being in "horrendous pain" but despite this, a court heard, she was told she could not have a C-section or an epidural to numb the pain, and would have to give birth naturally.
Then at 4.30pm, her stillborn baby boy, called Tom, was delivered who had "the cord wrapped around his stomach and arm (which) had stopped him feeding". Kelsey's condition worsened, and she was pronounced dead at 7.15pm that day.
At her inquest on February 26 at Gerard Majella Courthouse, senior coroner for Liverpool and Wirral, Andre Rebello, said a Spanish investigation into the mum's death was still ongoing. He said: "On July 20 2021 Kelsey went into labour and was taken to the clinic. A heart monitor couldn't detect a heartbeat for the baby and Kelsey was advised she couldn't have a caesarean or epidural and she would have the baby delivered naturally.

She was bleeding profusely... Kelsey was given injections continuously through the birth which caused her to lose consciousness, and then Kelsey became unresponsive. Hospital staff couldn't find a pulse from her finger."
It was heard Kelsey continued to lose blood after the birth, but there was no blood in the clinic and a transfusion had to be brought in from another hospital at 6.45pm. Tragically, Kelsey was pronounced dead just 30 minutes later - but the coroner said "she may well have died earlier". A post-mortem found her cause of death was unascertained, reported the Liverpool Echo.
Mr Rebello said her death and the childbirth complications were "clearly linked", but was unable to make further findings due to a lack of evidence. He said: "Kelsey died following childbirth of baby Tom in Marbella, Spain. The circumstances of Tom's delivery are unclear and remain subject to a Spanish investigation. The only conclusion I can come to is an open conclusion as the evidence doesn't support what's happened. The Spanish authorities will hopefully make findings to get justice for what has occurred."
Kelsey's mum Maria Brown said: "If she had had even a caesarean early on, it would have helped. If they had blood in the hospital. She was bleeding from 1.30pm. She was bleeding until 7 at night. And what were the injections that they were giving her, knocking her out and bringing her round? That's what we need to know."
